The vexations question of a water
supply for Americus seems In the way
of immediate settlement, and of a settle
ment entirely satisfactory.
For some time it hat been known that
tho supply of water was not sufficient to
meet the constantly Increasing demands
of Americus. This has hung like a
cloud over men who had the city's af
faire in charge. Theyiometime since
realized that the springs which it was
originally supposed would supply the
city for years to come bad beenoverestl
mated or that the city’s growing capacity
had been underestimated. The result
wss the cloud before mentioned. But
the clouds are clearing and that sheen of
silver which is said to be behind each
cloud is beginning to show through and
make the prospect for water brighter.
This is good news.
Several months ago the city fathers
began to consider the matter of water in
its vital importance to Americus, and
they discusaed several plana for meeting
the fact that was staring them in the
face. But the city fathers are intelli
gent men, and they knew that words
and nothing but words, that words
without work would amount to naught
in getting more water. They knew that
the people of Amerious needed water
and that they must have it. So without
parleying any longer than was absolutely
necessary they decided to have an arte
sian well bored at the water works
pumping station.
They let the contract to Mr. H. D
Loyd, and work was commenced at
once.
Yesterday morning the men who were
working on the well were rewarded for
their labors by seeing a stream of spark
ling water rise from tho hole in the
ground whloh they were drilling to
height of several feet. The drill wss
taken out 'and it was found that water
had been struck. The well flowed about
fifteen gallons a minute. This water was
Struck at a depth of 578 feet.
Now that It la reasonably oertaln that
water will beobtalned the work on the
well will be pushed more rapidly than
ever. It is confidently expected that
when the well has been sank deeper that
a supply of water the equal of that fur
nished by anylwell in the country will be
strnok. It is to be hoped that these ex-
pectations will be realized.
TUbee who tasted the water whloh
flowed from the well yesterday eay that
it Is the equal of any of whloh they have
ever partaken. It ie limpid and cold
and smacks strongly of mineral qnaUtles
which will make it mneb (ought after.
If when the well la completed the
flow ie such as the history, of all wells
has shqwn to follow In the wake of flf-
teen gallons per minute for the first
flowing stream struck there wilt be
cause for great rejololng, for Americas’
water supply puzzle will have been
solved and the people of this city will
haVc the purest and beet water ever
served through a waterworks.
Some of the water whloh flowed from
the well yesterday will be analyzed. It
is expeoted thatthe result will show a
water wHch villi • rival •to-mesUcioul
properties that furnished by many of
the popular springs of tho country,
The striking of thle water mesne much
for the people of Americus.
One who is in a position to know told
a Timks-Rxcordib reporter that if the
flow of the well is such as is to be
pected the cost of water will bo greatly
reduced In Americus. He said also that
If the well turned ont as expeoted there
will be no more trouble of a scarcity of
water In Americus, for the springs al
ready used and the well together would
furnish enough of nature's beverage to
supply the demand for years to come.
It was thought at one time that In or
der to get enough water to meet the de
mand the creek would have to be tapped.
It will be of special Interest to know
that a flow of water at this well will do
away with the probability of the creek
being tapped, which was a stumbling
block in the way of Americus peonle.
There is every indication that this
block will be speedily removed.
