SALE OF OVER AND EXCLAIMED
FREIGHT-
STRONG HORSERADISH.
XI Did Krerythlng In lion* Lancnase
Except Secure a Customer.
The young man had been a groom at
the riding school and had also been em
ployed at a sale stable. Still, the knowl
edge that he had acquired at these places
did not serve him well, now that he
was engaged as clerk in a grocery store
on Sirtli avenue.
One day a young lady came in the
store and asked the clerk if they had
any horseradish.
‘‘Hossradish? 1 should say we have,
exclaimed the young man. “We prob
ably have the most remarkable hos*
radish in the market,” and he pulled
down a bottle, covered with the dust of
ages, and rolled it along the counter.
“Observe its gait,” he continued with
enthusiasm. “There’s a hossradish that
1 can recommend. There’s an A No. 1
family hossradish. J can warrant it to
work anywhere. It will drag a family
carriage, on a heavy track, in 3:40.”
The yonng lady looked at the clerk
with some astonishment She wanted
the horseradish, however, and ventured
to ask if it was strong.
"Strong?' echoed the clerk: "why. it's
as strong as a steam stamp puller. It's
the strongest hossradish that et(er looked
through a collar. Yon can take it right
ont of yonr phaeton, after a whirl around
Central park, hitch it to a stone Imat,
and If it doesn't pull more than a loco
motive I'll knock it in the head. Fact
is. it’s a heavy draught hossradish, with Kevin., oi. rh.ree. two.

“I meant to ask,” said the young lady,
aomewhut confused, “if it is sharp-
does it bite?**
“Bite? So; it’s gentle as a sucking
dove; wouldn’t bite the smallest child.
It seems kind o’ sad like when it lias to
take the bit in its mouth. Qh, no; it
wouldn’t bite a piece of molasses candy.
And kick? You couldn’t make that
hossradish kick if you tickled it with a
straw,” and the clerk punched the bottle
in the ribs as proof of its excellent dis
position.
The young lady did not Beem entirely
satisfied with the recommendation, and
took the bottle up to examine it more
closely.
“That’s right, said the affable young
man; “look it over carefully. Examine
it closely for ringbone, spavin, quarter-
crack, heaves, thumps, mumps, bumps,
dumps, grumps or anything else under
the shiniug sun. If you find it is not
sound as a dollar, the hossradish is yours
without costing you a red cent, and with
A nice set of silver mounted harness
thrown in. Shall I wrap it up?”
The yonng lady said she would not
take it along now, but might call later
with a halter to lead it home.—River
and Driver.
Against Woman Preachers.
Americus people, and especially the
Baptists, since the discussion has arisen
in a Baptist church, are interested in the
discussion as to whether womeu should
preach in the churches, which grew' out
of the refusal to let Miss Mattie Gordon
use the First Baptist church in Atlanta
for such.
In a conversation with a Timi>- j
Hecoiedkk reporter on the subject I)r. :
Campbell, pastor of the Baptist church. ,
expressed himself as being heartily op- j
posed to women preachers. He has so j
expressed himself to his congregation, i
when drawn out, on several occasions. ;
Dr. Campbell said he was glad to
know that the Baptist ministers of At- j
lanta had unanimously endorsed I)r. J
Hawthorne’s stand against women j
preachers, and that he believed if the
matter was left to the Baptist ministers
of the entire state and country an over
whelming majority of them would ex
press themselves in the same way.

The men who make the force at the

mutiny among themselves. It la all
about water. The company has an arte-
alan well here, but the pumpman baa It
ao arranged that no water can be ob
tained for drinking purpoaes, and tne
force down there haa to draw Ita water
supply from a branch near by or from a
hydrant where the water baa atood and
