Several bushels of peaches which were
raised in Sumter county were brought to
Amerlcns and sold yesterday.
The old reliable Amertcus Ice Compa
ny furnishes all the Ice used by the
Southwestern road. That speaks well
for that concern and for Amerlcns.
The talk of organizing a gun club here
is being revived. There is some good
material here for such a club, aud Ameri
cas could put a winning team in the
field.
While trying to master the mysteries
of hycicle riding yesterday, young Em
mett Holland bad his right arm dislo
cated and sustained other painful
bruises.
A large delegation of alliancemcn
will come from Urooks ami Lowndes
county to attend the grand alliance rally
in Americus. They have already writ*
ten for quarters while here.
One who is well posted on things re
lating to tile building t liat is going on in
Americus yesterday informed a reporter
that work has been commenced on a
dozen buildings in Americus duriug the
last twelve days.
An out house on the place of Mr. F,
W. Arnold, near Americas, was con
sumed by Are Tuesday night. It was
only by the most heroic work that the
gentloman's dwelling house was saved
from being consumed.
One croaker can puli down in a day
that which it takes active, energetic,
enterprising men a year to talk and
build Up. There nro few croakers In
Americus, and that is the secret of the
city’s wonderful prosperity.
One of the busiest places in Americus
is tlie funiture factory. A reporter was
informed yesterday that this concern
will declare a handsome dividend at the
next ann'ial meeting of its directors.
Some splendid work is being done there.
It is said that owing to one of those
misunderstandings which causes the
course of true love not to rnn smooth,
that double wedding has been declared
off. One of the sisters will marry but
the other will cling to singlo blessedness
awhile longer.
Several real estate deals are on tapis
which, tf consummated, will havo the
effect of driving away all thoughts of
anything akin to inactivity in that lino.
Deep waters run quietly,significantly re

Recently Americus’ military enthusi
asm haa broken out afresh, and there Is
now quite an undercurrent of sentiment
here la favor of the Americus Light In
fantry preparing a drill team to be
entered at the military contest of the
Augusta exposition.
From advloes received yesterday It
was ascertained that tho boys of the
Americus Light Infantry reached C'blck-
amauga right side up with care and that
they have settled down to camp life In
good ahape. Their trip haa been with
out special Incident so far.
A gentleman who was passing through
Magnolia dell yeiterday flushed a covey
of negro gamblers. The birds made
flight, but some of them were recog
nized and their arrest will probably fol
low, They left their cards and the
money for which they were playing.
Considerable of the material that Is to
be used In putting the plate glass and
iron front in the building which will bo
occupied by the Americus Jewelry Com
pany has been received. When the im
provements on It are completed this will
be one of the handsomest buildings In
Americus.
From a gentleman who saw tho darky
a reporter learned yeiterday that the
negro who was shot at Leslie Saturday
is not dead The ball entered his chin,
ranged downward and around the neck
and is imbeded somewhere in the back
of the neck. With such a wound it Is
wonderful that lie didn’t die, but ho Is
still alive. Tlie negro who did the
shooting has not been caught yet.
Veaterday Mr. Luther 0. Bell, who
has been for so many years connected
with Thornton Wheatley's clothing and
gents furnishing goods store, severed
his connection with tl-at establishment,
lie will leave In a few days for Trenton,
N. J., to take a special course In book
keeping lo order lo better perfect him
self for the duties of secretory snd
treasurer of the AmerW-.us Jewelry Com
pany. Ills many friends will join in
wishing him that degree of success
which he Is sure to attain.
