Wedding bells will ring in Americus
to-morrow for two of the city’s most
popular young people.
Sunday and Sunday night are pro
nounced the hottest in the history of
the proverbial “oldest inhabitant.
From reports which reached the city
it seems that copious rains /ell in several
portions of Sumter county yesterday.
Judge Allen Fort will convene the
motion session of Sumter superior court,
which was adjourned until May 30, to
day.
The usual meeting of the council was
held yesterday afternoon. Nothing of
any import to the general public was
done.
There is some talk of a game of ball
between teams from Albany and Mon
tezuma to he played iu Americus at an
early day.
A lively scrap occurred on Lee street
yesterday between two small boys, in
the course of which one of them almost
lost an eye.
Watermelons are plentiful in Americus
now. Plenty of large ones are being
brought in from the country every day
and tho market is kept stocked.
An assault and battery case was bofore
Justice Oliver yesterday. Tho parties
weie dismissed on their own recogui
zancc until Mouuay, when tho case will
be called.
Simon Blackman, colored, was before
Judge Pilsbury yesterday, charged with
stealing two sheep haslets from Guerry
& Castleberry, the Lamar street butch
ers. lie was given six months or $23.
Elsewhere will bo found a notice of tho
dissolution of the cotton firm of Hamil
ton & Co. This firm has bought much
cotton in Americus during the past sev
eral years. Mr. K. T. Johnson will con
tinue to buy here.
Cantaloupes have not yet made their
appearance in the Americus market.
Some fine gentleman who has a flue
patch of this delicious fruit can rake In
many shekels by pushing them forward
to Americus dealers.
The teachers of Sumter county, so far
as can be hoard from, are taking a lively
interest in the county teachers' institute.
It is altogether probable that quite a
largo proportion of the teachers will bo
on hand at tho first meeting next Mon-
day.
A grand colored mechanic 1 , conven
tion will bo hold in Amcricna July 11
and July 14 for the benefit of tho me

Walter Corbett of Macon passed through
Americus on his way to Mitchell county
