It now turns out that many persons

collapsed in Xew York the other day
had their fears all along. Several of
them told their wives that t' ey realised

They waited too long.
Tiik unanimous election of Judge
Welborn Clark as president of the Youug
Men’s Democratic Club of Sumter county
was a fair compliment to this distin
guished young Georgian who cornea of a
raco who have ever been found truo to
duty’s call. Judge Clarke is a young
man of decided ability and splendid
enthusiasm. The Timks-Recohdeu con
gratulates lilin and tho club on his elec
tion.
When it comes to tho artistic handling
of local and society news, there isn't a
paper in the South that can compare
with the Augusta Evening News. What
is commonly called “slush” In other city
papers is charmingly written nows in tho
columns of the bright Augusta journal,
that is thoroughly enjoyable cveu to
those wlio are strangers to the condi
tions that invest these articles with
special interest to tho Augustans.
IIon, Mark Everett, Stewarl'a rep
resentative, was most unjustly attacked
and brutally., beaten by a bully, Kred
Cooper, at tho Kiaihall House in At
lanta on Thursday night. Mr. Everett’s
wounda are soverc, but by no means
dangerous, and it is probable ho will be
out in few days. The exaet cause of the
assault is not known. Cooper is in the
county jail and Mr Kverett is under the
care of hD filends and physicians.
Tue legislature says that three su
preme court judges must continue to do
the Immense volume of business, which
the increased dockot demands of them,
when really twice the number could
scarcely transact It. The vast majority
of ordinary mortals little know, nor can
they appreciate, the wear and tear of
excessive and monotonous brain work.
The verdict Is, Georgia’s judiciaries
must fill untlmoly graves or come off
tho bench.
Many a death Is traced to a picnlo,
but one picnic held recently In Florida,
on Jackson’s Island, la credited with
saving a valuable life, that of Capt. W.
I. Vason of Tallahaaseo. In a letter
written by him to a friend—so the Levy
Timcs-Dcmocrat lays—he states that
while he was there, and at the time he
was making an address, lightning struck
hla office in Tallahassee, and the very
chair he would In all probability have
boon occupying bad be not attended the
picnic, was torn to pieces.—Jacksonville

Secretary Tracy has done well in
ordering a cruiser to Honolulu at this
time. It Is desirable that our Govern
ment ahould hold a point of observation
there os long as the state of things con
tinues to be as mixed as it now is. We
must keep a watch, a naval watch, over
the manoeuvring* of the foreign and
native factious which are now contend
ing with each other for the control or
possession of the Hawaiian Government,
and some of which are trying to carry
out project* in which wo are interested.
That Government is in a critical situa
tion in those times, and the death of the
shrewd American who was the Queen's
husband and adviser has made the situa
tion even more eiitleal Ilian it was dur
ing bla lifetime. We are not prepared
to admit the right of any foreign power
to aeixe the Hawaiian Islands, or to es
tablish a protectorate over them, or to
wheedle Queen Lilluokalanl Into the-
slgnlng of a treaty that will permit the
planting of a foreign garrison on Ha
waiian soIL
this Slate the railroad commission has
complete control of railroad rates.
Nothing lias appeared anywhere to show
that the railroads are greater than the
commission. On the contrary, it is a
fact that the railroads have never failed
to comply with the regulations provided
by tlie commission. Some of them hare
protested against rates fixed by the
commission, but their protests have
aviled them nothing.
If the attack that is being made upon
the railroad combinations of this State
should he successful tlie result would be
that the commission would have to raise
the rates to enable the roads to pay ex
penses and meet their fixed charges. It
is apparent therefore that the object of
the attack is not to benefit the people.
And it is doubtful if tho section of the
constitution relating to railroad monopo
lies would have been adopted bad it
been understood how completely rail
roads could be controlled and regulated
by a commission
In the railroad world tlie movement
toward combinations is almost irresist
ible. In a lottcr writton last Monday
Chief Justice Illeckley, of this state,
speaking of the discussion now going on
in the legislature relative to railroad
consolidation, said: “Development In
cludes the combination of links into
chains, and the consolidation of chains
into systems, for control and manage
ment. The reason why railway service
is better and cheaper after consolidation
than it could ho before, is the same rea-,
son which enables the wholesale dealer ’
to sell superior goods at a lower price
titan tlie ordinary retailer can afford to ■
sell an infurior article."
Tlio foregoing seems to be n sensible i
view of the matter. It tense who are at-1
tacking the railroad combinations could ■
show that tho people would he bond! ted
if they should succeed in their purpose ;
they would be entitled to encourage
ment, but that they can not do.—Savan
