THE AMER1CUS DAILY TBIES-RECORDER: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER IK, 1891.
RACING AGAINST TIME.
THE CONTEST AN EQINE AND FOUR
COACHES WILL ENTER.
A Trial of Speed on the Central Railroad
A (Hear Track From Albany to Atlanta—
Two Hundred and Ten Mllea In Fonr
Hours With Three Stop*.
To-day will bo the greatest day
railroading ever known In Georgia, for
an engine and four coaches will race
against time from Albany to Atlanta, a
distance of 210 miles.
The reason of this is as follows:
Last year the Central was debarred
from transporting travelers to and from
Florida in sleepers, because of its incon
venient schedule, consequently the E.
T. V. & G. had them all. But this year
things will be different, and the Central
railroad management has decided that
this winter the Central will be In the
fight and make it a fight to the finish.
It is therefore an object to discover
the quickest time in which the run from
Albany to Atlanta can be made, and to
that end a bran new engine and four
splendid coaches were sent down to
Albany yesterday, and tho run will be
made to-day.
Tho engine, from Albany to Macon, a
distance of 107 miles, will be handled by
Engineer Tolbert, and at Macon another
engine under tho charge of Engineer
Clark will take the coaches into Atlanta,
a distance of 10:5 miles, and whatever
time is made in this great race will he
made schedule time for the winter'
schedule.
.Said Agent Maxwell in speaking of the
matter: “Engineers Tolbert and Clark
are to the other engineers of this state
as Ben Ilill was to the bar of Georgia,
and arc known ns cool, nervy men, who
will run according to orders without the
least particle of fear or a sign of weak
ness. The coaches will bo empty, of
course, but the regular crew, from con
ductor down will be ou board, and only
three stops will be made between A1
bany and Atlanta, and they will be mado
at Amerlcus, Macon and Griffin.”
It was learned that the track will be
clearod for the great race against time,
and the train will leave Albary aids
morning as soon as it is light enough to
sec well. When Engineer Tolbert touches
the throttle he will “pull he wide open, ’
and the landscape will be nothing but a
blur oo the horlzon^statious will go by
quicker than thought—and people will
see the train go by before they hear it.
It other words It will be like Mark
Train's jack-ass rabbit, “you can’t see it,
but you can hear it whizz T*
It is said that it is expected that the
run will not exceed four hours iu dura
tion; at any rate, fifty miles an hour Is
the minimum speed that will be
figured on.
As soon as tho timo is ascertained
definitely a through train is to bo put on
between Atlanta and Jacksonville—a
regular limited, express, and such a train
as it will be wa* never yet seen in the
south. The appointments will bo of the
very finest and tho servico will be
watched over carefully and constantly
improved until It is ns near perfectness
as human agency can make it.
It will be a big thing for Ameilcus
when such a train is put on the Central
and to-day’s raco will bo a feather In
Georgia’s cap for no such experiment
has been previously mado in the south—
at least for such a great distance.
Just think of it—210 miles in as much
less than four hours as possible!
’isn't that fast enough ?
