state D< mocratic convention was called
to order here at 10 a. m., and after the
presentation of the decision in regard
to the county Democracy, the commit
tee on resolutions reported a platform
and it was read. On motion of Mr.
Griffin it was adopted with applause.
Mr. Canter of New York, introduced
the following resolution, which waa
adopted: Resolved, that this conven
tion views with gratification the grow
ing friendly feeling towards the Demo
cratic party of our colored fellow citi
zens in the state; and they are wel
comed to our ranks with the assurance
that within onr party the discrimination
on account of race or color is discoun
tenanced.
Then Titos. F. Gilroy moved to pro
ceed with nominations, and Major Por-
tor nominated Roswell P. Flower for
governor. In the coarse of his speech
he said that the Democracy of the state
nt their primaries ! and district gather
ings with an unanimity rarely equalled,
have pronounced’ fheir choice of the
person whom they desire to be made
their leader by the delegates of Ibis
convention. He olpsed his speech with

tion in behalf of Tammany hall.
After- Colonel Fellows had finished,
Thomas Dewitt of Kings county, placed
la nomination Alfred (J. Chapin for gov
ernor. Mr. Dewitt said that we shall
vote for Mr. Chapin at the beginning
and we shall vote for him at tile last.
Bmii ke Cochran then seconded the nom
ination of Flower. Cochran was at one
time prevented from continuing his re
marks on account of the yelling from
Chapin's side, and when the demonstra
tion subsided Cochran remarked: ” I
suppose that this is the first exhibition
of Burley temper on yonr part, ” refer-
ing to tile Chapin men.
General Collier of Kings, took the
platform Ultra and seconded Chapin’s
nomination.

It is reported that the strikers at Ot
tawa, Canada, are becoming riotous.
A tramp has been arrested at Wat-
kinsville. Git., who is thought to have
had a hand in the wrecking of the pass
enger train near Statesville, N. C.
Dr. Edward Eggleston and Miss Fran
ces E. Goode were wedded at Madison,
Ind., and left for a trip through Canada
to Dr. Eggleston's home, Lake George,
N. Y.
Dispatches from Dayton, 0., states
that if a frost does not route before the
20th inst., the growers will have in the
sheds the greatest tobacco crop the
Miami valley ever produced.
Near Charlotte, N. C., Constable
Phillips shot and killed a young white
man tiutned William McKee. Phillipa
claims that McKee resisted arrest. The
bullet entered McKee's back.
At Atlanta, the Young Men’s Demo
cratic league held a grand rally at the
Capitol, uud addresses were delivered
by Congressman Crisp, Governor Nor-
then and other prominent Georgians.

Savannah, Sept. 18 —The Southern
Express robbers were captured seven
teen miles from Madison. Ga.
The burglars got only $400, a part of
which has been recovered.
They are J. E. Delaughter, J. A. Tur
ner, J. M. Perkins, and all hod been in
the Central's employ, ,

Cleveland. O., Sept. 16.—A lineman
for the Western Union Telegraph com
pany was talking to some friends in
front of the court house there and after
wards began to climb a telegraph pole
to adjust a wire. He bad reached a
point lteyotid the first cross bar, when,
with a shriek, he fell backward. His
spurs cangbt in the iron steiis of the
pole arid lie ltnng downward, a tele
phone wire had fallen across the elec-
trio light wire, and McCufferty received
I he terrible voltage in his body.
His face anti arms were turned block,
and he Imng fully three initiates before
n ladder could be secured anil the un
fortunate man brought to the ground.
He died on the way to the hospital.
Over a hundred spectators witnessed
the terrible scene.

of-the Piedmont Exposition has deter
mined to surpass all former efforts in
making the exposition of this year
eclipse in magnitude and grandeur, any
exposition ever witnessed in this conn-

At a meeting of tbe board of directors
of tbe Bank of Americas, held yester
day, tbe resignation of Mr. W. E, Mur-
phey, tbe caabler, was received and ac
cepted.
Mr, Murpbey has filled the position of
caabier with this bank for a number of
years and only leaves it now to organize
another banking institution In which
venture he is associated with some of
the most, prominent business men In
Americus. The charter for tbe new
bank is now before the legislature and
it is expected that it will begin business
early in the fall and as soon as all ar
rangements are made the details of the
organization and the names of officers
and directors will be given in full.
Mr. Hurphey has won many friends
during his connection with the Bank of
Americur, and they will watch hia ca
reer in the world of finance with in
terest
Mr. M. B. Campbell, who for the past
two year* has been assistant cashier
and teller In the Bank of Americas, suc
ceeds Mr. Muphey, and tbe promotion
la a high compliment to him, empha
sizing as It does the confidence and es
teem with which he Is regarded by the-
dlrectors.
Mr. Liston Coopor, formerly book
keeper, becomes by promotion assistant
cashier, and this is also a well deserved
compliment, and a proof of trust and
honor.
