A Calcutta dispatch says: It is offi
cially announced that there is a serious
rise in the price of grains in nearlyjtll
the districts of the province ot Madras.
This rise in prices is attributed to the
contluued failure of the sontwest mon
soon. •
At Berlin, Emperor William, In an
nnnsnally gracious letter, has declined
to accept the proffered resignations of
General Albedyll and General Oeer-
icheidt-Hnellessem, saying that the
army cannot afford to dispense with the
service of snch well-tried leaders.
Hon. Jacob Turner, ex-congressman
from the twenty-first Pennsylvania dis
trict, died at his home in Greensbnrg,
Pa., of gangrene, the result of an acci
dent. The deceased was 68 years cf
age, and one of tbe most prominent
Democrats in western Pennsylvania.
Aprivate letter received at Lexington,
Va., contained the information that
General William Henry Fitfthngh Lee,
congressman from tbe Alexandria dis
trict, is dangerously ill at his home, near
Unrlcs Station. His recovery is donbt-
f nl. General Lee is a son of General U.
E. Lee.
At Indianapolis, Md., fire consumed
the canning works of thn VanCamp
Packing company. The total loss is
$200,000, on which there is $149,500 in
surance. Four firemen were caught by
a falling wall and badly bnt not fatally
hurt. Pipeman Martin Haley was over
come by heat and will probably die.
Mr. Charles Murphy, special agent of
the United States agricultural depart
ment, is in Berlin. Mr.-Murphy’s visit
is made for the purpose of bringing to
tbo attention of the authorities the

food. A committee of officers from tbe
medical and commissary departments
of the army have been appointed to in
vestigate the matter.
At Pottsville, Pn., by nn explosion in
the Richardson colliery John Mngosky,
a Puliinder, was killed, and James Grant
and Thomns ConviUe seriously injured.
The men entombed in the mine are
Thomas Claney, John Lawler, Jamos
Simmon, Michael Welch and John Pnr-
cell, fireboss; all married. John Ca-
shyck, a Polander, single. There is no
hoi>e of recovering them alive.
