“THE PHARMACY *
ON THE CORNER OF FOR8YTH
STREET AND COTTON AVENUE.
Dr. w. O RaeaelTi "Pharmacy*' Haa Be
come an Iactltmion la the General Pro-
rree. of the Place—A Neat Place of Baal-
arse and a Well Amorted Sleek.
* Mr. Tbps. J.Kenny, representing the
owners Pf tbe Amerlcna Street Railroad,
arrived in Amerien* late but night
Mayor Felder eras advised of his com
ing late yesterday afternoon.
It will be remembered that last week
when Mr. Kenny left Amerlcna he stated
. in Tan TimxbRxcordkk that he wanted
additional subscriptions to amount al-
ready subscribed, and he is back here to
- close the arrangements in order that he
may wire bis parties the very best offer
that can bo made by the people of
Americus.
So far Mr. Kenny feels greatly encour
aged by what has been done and let us
now make one grand effort and give him
the additional amount *
His presence here now must convince
everybody that the owners of the pro|>-
erty mean business.
From this it would seem thst at last
there is something tangible and definite
as regards this much discussed question,
and the people can see exactly the post
tlon in which it stands. Fifteen-hun
dred dollars more of guaranteed ticket
purchases assure us of the road’s opera
tion, and It should be raised witbin six
hours.'- There were many who did not
before care to subscribe until they were
sure of the ultimate result of the negotia
tions.
If our people can raise the required
addition to the amount already subacri-
bed it is believed the owners will take
steps to clear up the track and place the
necessary new rolling stock, and then
will put on a fifteen-minute schedule
over the electric belt line.
There baa already been so much said
In these columns regarding the vital lm-
portance of this matter that any further
urging seems almost superfluous. . It is
to be hoped and is almost certain
that our business men will respond
promptly to this new call to be made
upon their spirit of progresslreness and
public enterprise, and sixty days benoe
the cars will be running as if there had
been no break in their traffic.
The Bottom of the Sea.
“The Bottom of the Sea,” a marine
spectacle adapted from the French by
William A. Brady, will be produoed at
the opera bouse next Tuesday night,
Ootober 18. Coming as it does direct
from its New York and Boston presen
tations the piece Is to be mounted In the
tame manner that characterised its suc
cess in those cities. From all accounts
the toenlc and mechanical effects are
really superb. II Is, In fact, on reallstio
scenery thst the success of the play de
pends. The piece de resistance Is the
scene showing the bottom of the sea,
with divers at work in the wreck of a
sunken ship. The battle between one of
the divers and a gigantic devil fish Is
very realistic. The other scenes are the
rescue in mid-ocean and the deck of the
French man-of-war.
The events oentre about the laying of
a West India cable by a young French
engineer, assilted by an American engi
neer. Both love the former's oonaln and
this leads to the trouble. ▲ rascally
Greek tries to kill the French engineer
at the bottom of the sea, and the Ameri
can engineer is arrested for tbe murder.
The supposed dead man, however, turns
np alive and saves tbe accused man. The
Greek Is killed la attempting to escape
and all ends happily.
One of the cleanest, handsomest busi
ness bouses in the city Is “The Phar
macy" Of Dr. W. C. Russell, at tbe cor
ner of Forsyth street and Cotton avenne
and although not Immense In measure
ment It contains probably one of the
best assorted stocks in Georgia, of
drugs, medicines, toilet goods, and pro
prietary articles of all kinds. The dis
play of novelties in plush and cut glass
is something to gladden the aesthetic
eye, and the smile of the genial “Doc” is
a discount of at least 40 per cent, from
the price marked upon bis goods. Being
one of tbe most thoroughly informed
pharmacists In the state his prescrip
tion business has grown to large propor
tions, and bis patrons in that line know
that Implicit reliance may be placed
upon tbe faithful performance of tbe
physician's directions. This department
Is under the personal supervision of Dr.
Russell himself, and to this fact is owing
tbe magnitude which it has attained.
The assortment of patent and proprietary
medicines contained at “The Pharmacy”
Is one both varied and complete, the
proprietor priding himself upon the fact,
of never allowing his stock to run low.
To the lover of the weed “Tbe Phar
macy" offers peculiar attractions at the
cigar counter, and tbe excellence of the
brands handled ia fully evidenced by
tbe class of regular customers, who,
knowing a good smoke when they see
it, drop in daily for their post-prandial
cigar.
Taken as a whole, In neatness, cleanli
ness and solicitous attention to custom
ers, “The Pharmacy” has few equals
and no superiors, while its popularity
and reputation for general trustworthi
ness is unsupaseed.
And Russell, himself, is always on
deck, and though slightly discomposed
from his recent encounter with the de
ceptive and deadly “unloaded postol,”
he Is rapidly recovering from the pain
ful accident resulting therefrom, and
the genial smile and witty repartee
again gladden the hearts of his numer
ous friends who love so well to drop in
after supper and on Sunday afternoons.
Truly, “age cannot wither, or custom
stale his Infinite variety.”
The laud of Milk and Boner.
A number of the legal luminaries of
the Americus bar are spending this
week attending Webster court, and they
are having a good time, from all ac
counts. It seems that the judge and a
brilliant member from Sumter - are get
ting all the milk, while the reet of the
fraternity are drinking “only water.'
That's what oomee of a county being
divided on tbe milk question.

The board of county commissioners
yesterday closed tbe contract for tbe
new jail, with cells and fixtures com
plete, for tbe sum of $72,600. Tbe con
tract was awarded to tbe Pauley Jail Ball-
din g* Manufacturing Co. of St Louts,
Mo., and specifies tbe entire construction
and completion of the edifice according
to the plans prepared by Mr. U. L. Norr-
mann, tbe eminent Atlanta architect,
who superintends the erection.
Tbe successful bidders received the
award of contract over nlue other com
petitors, and they bear a national repu
tation as a firm of integrity and fairj
dealing.
The fact that Vorrman Is the architect
insures to the county a jail complete in
every respect, and the fact is greatly to
the credit of those in authority that
every precaution for ttie health of the
prisoners has been taken In the way of
sanitary plumbing and ventilation, and
when completed, if such an institution
can be a source of pride, Sumter county’s
new jail will be, as is tbe court house, a
credit to her people.
It will be erected back of the space
between the city ball and county court
bouse.
The board of county commissioners
erected for our prople a court house
which is a pride to the sta .e, and the
new jail will be entirely in keeping with
the ornate and substantial style of archi
tecture heretofore displayed in our pub-
lio buildings.
