Uncomplimentary printed or written
comments on Russian affairs do not u*u-
in Itself almost the whole of one block, ally pass through the Russian mails un-
the appearance it assumes as it nears | scathed. Mr. Konnan complnined that
completion is one which would grace a
city of many times the size of Ainericus.
With judicious advertising sncli
house should be the means of attracting
many northern visitors to our city in the
future. Thomasviile, possessing in no
respect superior advantages to Americas,
has succeeded by advertising, in drawing
to itself every winter hundreds of tou
rists who spend the cool season south,
and many of them, being captivated by
our climate have built elegant winter
residences thers.
In itself Thomasviile possesses no ad
vantage over any other jiortlon of south
ern Georgia in point of hcalth'uluess,
and solely to her pluck and energy is
due the fact that she ranks among the
first of the winter resorts. With the
completion of the Hotel Windsor Amer
icas can offer accommodations far supe
rior to Thomasviile, and game of all
kinds being abundant, with unexoelled
railroad facilities, there Is no reason why
our city should not every winter be filled
with health and pleasure seekers from
the north.

In yesterday’s issue of The Tivls-

the probable addition of the railroad

The Hpldsr and Fly.
The “Spider and Fly” ia a new melo
dramatic extravaganza that has met with
success. The old story has been trans
formed into one with human fnterest.
The effects are good, the costumes rich,
and the whole presentation notable
for good taste.—New York Morning
Journal.
■lie Century was mutilated before it
reached his hands when he was in Rus
sia, although lie had presented letters
and passports of exceptional strength
to the Russian officials. Tho American
Hebrew of the current issue prints a fac
simile of one of its pages as it appeared
after the Russian censor got through
with It. Two paragraphs hail boon cov
ered with black ink in sucli a way as to
completely destroy them. One para
graph thus obliterated referred to the
sympathy expressed for the Russian
Jews by Stepniak and Kennan. Tho
other challenged Goidwin Smith’s un
derstanding of tlie Russian question.
The censor is said to have sev
eral ways of striking out objeetionable
passages in periodicals or books. Some
times they are cut or torn out, but tho
more frequent way, when the passages
are small, is to “caviare” them. In this
process they are blaoked out “by meads
of a rectangular stamp which has about
the width of an ordinary newspaper col
umn, and which is ‘cross-hatched’ In
suoh a way that when linked and
pressed upon the paper It makes a close
net-work of white lines and black dia
monds. The peculiar mottled and
grained appearance of a page of print
that has been blacked out with this
stamp suggested to the Russian readers
a descriptive slang term for it, namely,
! eaviare.’ Any one who has ever seen
the black salted caviare of Russia spread
upon a slice of bread and batter will ap
preciate the felicity of the metaphorical
comparison. From the noun a verb has
been formed, and every Russian now un
derstands that 'to caviare' means ‘to
black out’ an objectionable page or par
agraph by pressing upon It the censor's
stamp."
The American Hebrew bad a number
of subscribers lu Russia, but complaints
of non-delivery became so numerous
that they bad to be abandoned.
Telegraphic advices to The Times-
Hecohiier from Omaha, ou the 8 , A. A
M. railroad yesterday give Information
of a murderous assault made upon Mr.
Watson by a crowd of negroes.
Mr Watson Is foreman of the material
work on the road at that point and a few
days ago discharged a number of the
negroes whr were working for him.
Last night while on his way home he
was attacked by a large crowd aud badly
used up, his clothing being cut to pieces,
and he being terribly beaten and bruis
ed. His injuries are not serious.
Mr. Watson defended himself manfully
and succeeded in disabling several of
his assailants, but was flaally overpnw
ered by force of numbers.
Ife was able to identify most of the
party, and os a consequence is that four
teen negroes have been arrested and con-
lined in the Stewart county jail at Lump,
kin.
Tlie motive for tlie assault is supposed
to have been revenge for the discharge
from work.
