Duet! Blinding, suffocating, stilling.
Duet in the eye*, dual in the ears, duet,
dust everywhere. Is there no remedy?
Eveiy day many dollars wortli of valua
ble goods are damaged for the business
men of Americux, and this is probably
the only place of the size in the south
which docs not make somo public pro
vision for this annoying visitation which
is at any timo liable to assail the streots
of an unpave J city.
For the past fow days every gust (and
they have been strong and frequent) lias
lifted and hurled Into the eyes of those
nut of doors an amount of impalpable
real estate, which, if it could he collect
ed and dumped into one placo by an In
dividual, would enrich him fur life.
Driving being a period of continual dis
comfort, aud pcdcstriansm peculiarly
disagreeablo when turning corners and
facing a cloud of dust well nigh stifling.
There muBt surely exist some way by
which this great public evil may be
mitigated. In a city of the importance
and size of Americus, such contingen
cies are usually provided for by munici
pal legislation, and for us to continue
behind in so important respect does not
speak well for our general progressive-
cess.
Hare justice to the business men of
Americus, who have, by their pluck and
enterprise, raised our city to tbe proud
eminence of the metropolis of southwest
Georgia, demands that the town of their
own creation should fall behind others
In no single respect.
The question has been repeatedly
agitated In tbe columns of the Tires.
Recorder, and the urgency of the mat
ter cannot fall to be fully appreciated by
those wbo bave been compelled to expo
ricnco tbe annoyance of outdoor busi
ness during the past few days.
It la said there ii, even now, a case of
dangerous lllnest In tbe city which tbe
attending physician states was caused
primarily by tbe unbearable dust which
permeates the atmosphere.

The above line has appeared in Tiie
Times-Recoriieii for tbe past month
and probably many of its readera havo
■peculated as to the significance attach
ing to tbe two words.
As tbe writer understands it, Gambrl
nun, in German mythology occupies a
similar position with Bacchus in the
Greek. With the difference tnat Gatn-
brlntis was the god of malt liquors in
stead of vinous.
In the old legendary lore of Germany
la many a rollicking atory of which this
jovial god was the hero, anil his disci
ples have grown In numbers throughout
the dark and middle ages with a steady
augmentation, and to the civilized world
o( the present day, ale, porter and beer
occupy a vital part In the gastronomic
requirements o( every elate.
The rich and powerful serve upon their
ailver-lsden boards the health-giving bev
erage from ornate bohemian glasses,those
in moderate circumstance! And the mid
day meal “flat, stale and unprofitable”
without its appetizing flavor, while the
poor and needy savo from tho scanty
earnings of the day the few pennies with
which to “ruth the growler,” and thus
add zest to the frugal dinner.
.At No. 417, Cotton avenue, Messrs.

Yesterday morning about 10 o’clock
Dr. J. H. Winchester was summoned to
the bedside of Peter West, colored, who
had a short time before arrived at home
and been stricken with peculiar symp
toms, the muscles of his body were on
tirely relaxed, and an examination by
Dr. Winchester revealed the aymptoma
of a narcotic poisoning. West’s wife
told tbe doctor that her husband had
beon drinking, and that bo
only under the Influence of whis
key, but recognizing Immediately
that something unusual ailed his patient,
be used a stomach pump. But after
using the pump he could detect no trace
or odor of whiskey, though West, whom
tho doctor speedily restored, insisted
that be had only been drunk.
Dr. Wincheeter quickly eucceeded in
bringing bis patient around, and from
bis examination Is confident that West

authority of au intimate friend of Bis
marck that lie will in all probability
not lie n regular attendant nt the com
ing session of the reiclistng but will only
be present when subjects which he con
siders of vital interest are presented for
discussion. The prince has not altered
his views as to the tneUHce held out by

sing issue of the time. He is also
opposed to any policy which reluxes the
protection heretofore given to the in-
luttrinl and agricultural interests of

up, he will iiudonbtedly be heard, but
it is not liclieved that he will go out of
his way to criticise the reichstag’s per
