Sahsi'.Whitman, the man who Jilts 600
pounds, pushed a freight car weighing
80.000jponu.ds along a switch on North
street, «ear Madison, in the presence of
about 800 people. He got between the
car he .was to .pash and another, the
brakes .of which .were down. Seating
himself upon the. second car, he placed
his feet against the forward car. and,
after taking a .deep breath, gave it one
mighty push with them. The car
quivered tuicl (then-wept forward sever.-il
feet. He did this several times, but
owing to the car being on a grade he
fCould not iuot.) it very far. A car
weighing 28,000 pounds die moved with
.tH*e. Mr. Dnnu. the yardmaster, said
the cars moved would takedhe efforts of
at,least eight ordinary men.
jin .the afternoon Whitmah#ave an ex
hibition of his strength at .the gym-
uasiuij- at the central police station. He
handled a hundred pound dumbbell as
ilf lit.weighed five pounds. Captain Far-
nnu and one of Ids officers then got on
Whitmuifc back, who stooped .over, and
with his toitli picked np two dumbbells
tied together, weighing 100 pounds, amd
at the same .time lifted a hundred powad
bell ip each y'innd. The bells and men
on his back in ell weighed 000 pounds.
Whitman also lifted 300 pounds by his
teeth. Laying .oat flat on the floor, he
strapped a fifty pound bell to his foot,
and then raised it uj> slowly, stopping at
intervals. One of tjhe most remarkable
feats he did was to tie a twenty pound
bell on the end of a strap, the other end
of which he held in his teeth. He then
swung the bell around, and when he got
it high in air he jerked it hack with bis
teeth. Whitman, tbe wonder, was at one
time on the New York police force.—

Tiie Commercial Travelers' association
of New England has determined to erect
a monument for itself. This association
|is composed of 3,000 of the smartest and
most wide awake men of the land. They
are os a rnle men of intelligence and I
good standing, or they could not retainl
the positions which they hold and coin*
maud tiie high salaries which they re-1
ceive. The association has decided to]
erect an industrial and educational
bniiding at Good Will Homes and dedi
cate it to the work of saving boys. This
is, ssall will admit, a most praiseworthy I
enterprise and one that will commend
itself to ail classes.
The homes now shelter nearly fifty
boys, who need a workroom and a
schoolroom badly. Many of the lads
there have mechanical tastes which
should receive encouragement and train
ing. The farm work is not adapted to
all. but with the new building and tools
and machinery which will bo added to
it the homes will have taken a long
stride toward the successful accomplish
ment of its aim.—Fairfield (Me.) Enter

Some have a bark they would gladly
