Ib. Alabama M f lerera Prove to Bo SB
obl Nttn{b n fid Bl. Wlf#.
jloSTOOMBBV.Wor. 5.—Detective D.
w I). B inies, of the Louisville and
Nashville system, arrived here from
Oeorgiana, where he arrested Ed Moore
ami his wife, colored, on the strongest
evidence obtainable. After traveling
the murderer’s track from Georgiana
by his hounds. Chief of Police Potter-
field, of Greenville, tracked Moore to
his home, within two miles of where
old mau Sheppard and his wife were as
sassinated. At Moore's lionge found
his pants all spattered with traces of
blood, and his wife’s shoes and hat hid
den and, when found, were bloody. The
hat had the spider webs from the ceil
ing under the root on it yet, and other
evidences point bnt too strongly that
Moore and his wife are connected with
that murder, if not others.
When arrested Moore said: "Oh,
God, take care of me,” and crossed his
bands. He was covered with two pis
tols fnd offered no resistance. The
measure of his shoes fully corresponds
with the measure of the track as made
by Detective Barnes where the bloody
one laid. He left Moore and wife in
custody of the sheriff of Butler, at
Georgiana, but Barnes thought that
both would hang on the limb of a cedar
tree before morning. Revenge on the
part of E l Moore and wife, Maria, for
having been refused credit by Sheppard,
is believed to have been the prime cause
of the diabolical deed.
The state offers $400 and the citizens'
committee of Georgiana offers $500 ad
ditional for the apprehension, which
Barnes nud Pottertield will likely earn,
after two days and nights of tireless
search. The whole community and the
people around Georgiana are excited,
since another unknown white man has
been found, five miles from Georgiana,
also murdered, makingthesixth assassi
nation in that immediate vicinity ia a
few weeks. ■
Chi lies. I’I rates Seise a Vessel.
Hong Ko.xo, Nov. 5.—Piracy is again
rife along the coast near Amoy, after
having stilisided a little npon the cap
ture and execution of fourteen sea ro
vers in the spring. Three days before
the niid-autumn festival, a merchant
jnnk heavily laden, while proceeding to
Amoy, was followed by a strange craft.
When the vessels were close together
tlie junkmen called out to the crew of
tiie unknown lioat to keep clear and
avoid a collision, bnt the reply was the
fire of a bomb, followed by several men
with cutlasses and pistols. The junk’s
supercargo was killed and one sailor
leaped overboard auil was drowned.
The rest of the crew were tied to the
masts. After dividing the booty, the
pirates anchored their prize and drove
their crew on shore, themselves sailing
away. Hie authorities dispatched many
boats in pursuit, but all retnred with
out effecting their object.
Heavy Slum In the Northwest. /
Grand Forks, N. D., Nov. 5.— It
commenced snowing about noon mid is
drifting badly. Many of the men
brought np here from Wisconsin and
Minnesota to help thrashing grain have
left because of cold weather, and, as a
large portion of the grain is still nn-
thrashed, it is doubtful if farmers van
finish thrashing liefore spring. East
bound trains for two or three days lisve
been crowded with farm laborers leav
ing the state.
Convicted for tlie Third Time,

Seven other prisoners are bound for the
same destination. Tomlinson b is worn

Died or Diphtheria.
Louisville, Nov. 5.—Diphtheria has
caused tlie death, within seven days, of
three children of Mr. Fred R. Wernpe,
of tlie firm of Wetnpe Bros., cigar mam
ufactnrers. Ono week ago a son 8 years
of age, was carried off by tlie disease.
A few days later a son about 5 years of
age died, Within a few hours after the
funeral the youngest child, a son, al
most :i years of age, died. Mr. Wempe’s
lb-year-old daughter, the only living
child, is very ill. and is attended almost
constantly by physiciuns. Hor condi
tion is critical.
Tlio Deadly Cigarette.
Lebanon, Ind., Nov. 5.—Clara Neese,
aged 18, while returning home from the
theater, was persuaded by her escort to
indulge in cigarette smoking. She be
came ill shortly after returning home,
und gradually grew worse until she
tiled. The doctors gave us their opinion
that her death was the result of nico
tine poison, introduced into her system
by smoking the cigarettes.
Herman Colonists.
New \ork, Nov, 5.—The advance

THE ITATA CASE.
The Jury Instructed to Return a Ver
dict of Not Guilty.
Los Angeles, Cal., Nov. A—Judge
Rose of the United States circuit court,
granted the motion of the defendants
to instruct the jury to return a verdict
of not guilty in the case of tlie United
States against George A. Bart and Pe-
cardo Trumbull, who have been on
trial here for a week, charged with fit
ting ont the Chilian steamer Itata with
arms to cruise against the government
of Chili. The court grants the motion
on two points—first, that the indict
ment is defective, being formed nnder
the nentrality laws ia not stattng that
a state of war existed in Chili und that
the defendants were beligerents and
had been recognized as such; secondly,
the charges would trot hold, because the
statute contemplates a state of war, also
that the vessel coming to the United
States to get arms and carrying them
peacefully away was not fittiug out any
expedition that hail already been eet on
foot in Chili and was being conducted
from there and not from the United
States.
HYDROPHOBIA.
Young Gumbel Suddenly . Seised With
Uofiviif.lona at the Table#
Evansville, Ind., Nov. 5.—Nicholas
Gumbel, the 10 year-old son of Antho
ny Qutnbql, of German township, died
from hydrophobia. Young Gumbel
was bitten by a shepherd dog while out
hunting last July. The dog belonged to
him und turned suddenly on his mas
ter, fastening his teeth iu the calf of
the right leg, lacerating the flesh. The
boy shot the dog immediately, and
nothing more was thought of the bite.
Tlie wound healed up, and such a thing
os the dog being man was never dream
ed of. Saturday last young Gumbel
was taken suddenly with convulsions
while at the dinner table und made an
attack upon his father, trying to bite
him. Tlie boy was with difficulty put
under restraint and a physician sent
for. Tlie convulsions continued, vary
ing in intensity with the strength of
the youth. The case of the dog bite
was brought to mind and tlie nature of
tlie boy’s ailment realized. Everything
passible for the alleviation of tlie boy’s
Buffering was done, but to no avail,
RESCUED.
Fortlun of (ha Crew of tile Wrecked
Schooner Kltsapn.
Vancouver, B, C., Nov. 5.—The
steamship Empress of Ja.ian, has ar
rived from China and Japan, twelve
days from Yokohotna. She brought
Captain Tibbets and eight of tlie crew
of the schooner Kitsapa of San Fran
cisco.
They sailed from Port Townsend July
4. with a million feet of lumber, for
Shanghai, and were wrecked Sspt. 9, on
Barondiim Island. The schooner broke
up and the wreckage flouted away. The
crew remained on tlie island twenty-
seven days. Water and food gave out
and the men suffered terribly. The
captain, mute and two sailors left for
LooClioo Islands, and were picked np
by a steamer auil taken to Hiogo. A
passing steamer rescued the remain
der from Burondina. No lives were
lost.
Small Hating Trimble With Reporters.
