Ill the town of Patten, a place distant from tidewater o /er ninety miles, there is a great curiosity, known as the ‘’tur tle’s neat” For fifty-two years a turtle has come anonaily to the nest to deposit her eggs. Over half a century ago she selected her nest, then in an open field, bnt now in a yard in front of a resi dence. A relative of the owner of the house branded the date 1841 upon the turtle’s Imclt, aud it can be plainly traced now. Bhe comes sbont the same date each year, and her first few days are passed in inspecting the ancient nest, the yard and surroundings. Later she digs a hole in the ground and there deposits her eggs. This year she left forty-two eggs, bnt os many were carried away and the others often disturbed, only abont a dozen of the eggs hatched ont. The owner of the house lies ten of the little turtles, none more than twice the size of a postage stamp. The old turtle always departs after laying the eggs; the warm sand and sun serve as an incubator. This turtle has been seen at the Drew Dead Water on the Mattawamkeag river, fnlly fifty miles away from the nest. Her weight varies from thirty to thirty-five pounds, and it is said she was at large when branded as she is now. Each Jane sho comes to Patten, and is always welcomed by old and young.— Bangor (Me.) letter. Hat. Off In tbe Synagogue. The vexed question of “hats on 1 hats off” during public worship was settled at the annual meeting of the Aushe Cheeed congregation, at the tem ple on Scoville avenne. The old Jewish custom of the male members of the con gregation wearing their hats daring public worship has always been in rogue in this congregation. A nnmber of the younger and more progressive members have object^ to the enstora, and it hns canned more or leas discussion for several years. The older members held tena ciously to their hats, and the younger ones bided their time until they shonld have a sufficient' majority converted to their views to cliange the enstom. Tbe matter was brought np at the an nual meeting, which waa very largely attended. The bat question was dis cussed at great length, and several very warm speeches were made on both sides. It -was finally put to a vote, and the members who are opposed to wearing hats were victorious by a decided ma jority. The decision was that hereafter tbe congregation shall worship with hats off, but those who desire to retain their head covering will be permitted to do Cleveland Leader and Herald. COUNTY DIRECTORT. Walklug Ruck to the Big City. Wrecks of the early winter theatrical season are already aeen in New York— managers whose ventures have failed after • few nights ont of town, tired looking actors who seem to have walked home, and bedraggled looking women, whose faces tell plainly of their disap pointments. It is the old story of poor plays, poor houses and the refusal of the ghoat to do his weekly little pedestrian set. And yet in the main the theatrical ontlook is very good, for with big crops Comes plenty of money and an army of people to be amused. Bnt it is the sur vival of .the fittest. The poor plays are not patronised, and the manager! of many come to grief. There arejnany familiar faces on the Rialto today, men and women who started off a month ago filled with hope. Some of them will be glad to shovel snow for a living be fore spring.—Foster Coates in Mail and Express. A Bad Place far Wrecks. When a vessel sinks in the channel through Lake George flats, near Sanjt St. Marie, there ia plenty of trouble. Tbe value of the vesaels delayed by a wreck there recently ia estimated at 114,000,000, and that of their cargoes at ♦4,000,000. At one time sevsnty lake steam vessels were anchored on the east side of the blockade and sixtjr on the weat side, and a 'new channel bad to be cut through tbe flats to allow them to continue their Vrnys. Four dredges worked day and night to make a channel 700 feet in length, 00 in width and SO In depth. It is said that the only way to prevent accidents tike that which caused the wreck is to limit the speed of vessels in the channel. There was the same trouble at the St. Clair flats until men were stationed at tbe ends of the chan nel to time tiie vessels.—New York Sun. A Wonderful Underground Lake. An underground lake has been dis covered three miles from Genesse. Ida. It was fonud by s well digger. At a Jepth of sixteen feet clear, pure lake water ran ont over the surface fqr a time, then settled back to the earth's level. The most curious part of it is that fish were brought to the shrface on the overflow. They have a peculiar np pearance and are sightleoss, indicating Hut they are underground fish. The spring has attracted mneb attention, and many farmers in the vicinity fear that their farms will drop into tbe lake. —Boise (Ida.) Statesman. Robbed While Asleep. A queer case was tried In tbe circuit court of Louisrille Friday. The defeud- ant was a man who was captured in the act of committing burglary. The, de fease set up the plea that tbe defendant was a somnambulist and was asleep at the -time he committed the deed and was, therefore, unconscious of wrong doing. Tbe jnry believed and acquitted the man.—Philadelphia Ledger. The Babbit aad tbe Kitten.. J. R. Chapman baa a cat that band a young rabbit in the field a few days ago and carried it home, placing it with her kittens, and now the rabbit is just like one of tbe family and seems to be as happy as any of them.
