New York, Dec. it—Mr. Ward Mc-

Hiding the finishing touches to the Pa
triarchs’ ball, that took place, and mak
ing arrangements for the New Years’
ball, which McAllister declares is to be
the most magnificent entertainment
ever held in this city, and the culminat
ing effort of his life.
"Yon cannot imagine, don’t yon
know,” said Mr. McAllister, "of the
magnificence of that ball. Every day
it grows in magnitude. I have just or
dered 400 canvas-back docks and ISO
Bbode Island tnrkeys; just think of it.
It is the largest order ever given
caterer in New York.
"Four hundred canvas-back ducks!
exclaimed Mr. McAllister. "It is sim
ply delicious to think of it, and all of
them from Havre-de-Grace, In Mary
land. 'And 150 Bbode Island turkeys.
It is an interstate entertainment, don't
yon see, so to speak. Bbode Island and
Maryland are hand in hand.
"I have also engaged a chef—and snob
a chef!—who is to make his reputation
cooking these docks and these turkeys.
He was formerly chef to the queen of
Spain, the gourmet Isabelle, bat never
until now has he had a chance to make
a reputation. He will have that chance
at. the New Years ball. The basis of
the Patriarchs will be terrapin, with
sufficient quantum of duck; but the
keynote of the New Yean feast will be
canvas-baok dock. The invitations will
be ready to deliver by Dec. 15. The ball
will occur on January 18, and then,
don’t you know, the public will be In
terested to learn that this great feast
will be a thing to live in history.
"No,” added Mr. McAllister, in an
swer to a question, "Mr. Stuyvesant

Charitable Act of tha Cur.
8t- Petersbbbq, Dec. 11.—It has
been the custom of the Knights of the
Order of St. George ever since the
founding of the order in ITC9 by Em
press Catherine II, to give a, grand
banquet Ob the feast day of their pat
ron saint, .This year, however, the
czar, who is at the head of the order,
requested that the banquet be not
given, and that the money which it
was intended should be devoted to this
purpose should be given to the sufferers
from tha famine. The czar’s request
was willingly consented'to, and-the ran
suit will be a large subscription to the
famine fund. Many of 1 the grand din
ners given by .the officers of the various
regiments, societies, etc., have been
abandoned and the fonda usually spent
in these festivities have been given over
to aid the faffiloe Sufferers. The Grand
Duke George Alezandroviteh has do
nated the sum of 5,000 roubles to the
fund for the relief of the sufferers in
tha famine-stricken district.
Bloody Affray' lie tween Seamen.
Los now, Dec. 11.—A bloody affray
between seamen occurred at the. Mill
Wall dooka. . Three. Prussian and four
English sailors befeame involved in a
qnarrel, and ’ from' Words they quickly
came to blows. The fight was a most
desperate one, and the bystanders, who
thought it nothing more than a usual
sailor’s row, were horrified when they
saw the men draw knives and com
mence to stab and slash each other.
The onlookers were afraid to interfere
with the desperate men, and they fought
like ferocious taragt*. One of the Ei
lishmen named Swain was killed b;
stab wound in the neokj > Another Ei

there will not be much publio business
of any kind transacted in Congroae Un

self internally than externally. In atach
cases neglect means death, for the vital
organa once contaminated grow worse
unless they grow better, and they will
