AMENDMENT TO VAGRANCY LAW 1
Vagrants Would then Find More Trou- P
ble in Dodging it.
In Amerioup, as in every other ciiy
in the state, the authorities find it dis- t
ficult to convict idlersnnder the Calvin t
law, owing to ortain defects therein, (
and at the next session of the legisla- <
ture amendments will be prop std to 1
the end of strengthening the law. The j ’
feature of the Calvin law which makes i
it difficult to convict is the clause pre- I
vidmg that if a vagrant shows that be i
. has made a bona fide eff >rt to get em
ployment he is not guilty of vagrancy.
Ia the average case the defendant, af
ter the evidence is i-, makes a plausi
ble statement to the i ffjet that he ap
plied to a person for work.
Usually that i erson is miles away and
it is impracticable to suspend the trial
until he can be found. It is suggested
as a remedy that after the state shows
the defei daut is an idler, the burden
o’ proof should be shifted to the e’e
) fetdant. At present the state has to
> show that he does not work, has no
property, etc. With the burden of
proof shifted from the state to the de
fense, a* in a murder ease after the
state shows that a homicide has been
committed, it will be mnek easier to
' secure convictions.

SHE LISTENED TO A LIBERTINE
Deserted Her Children and Died in
Disgrace.
From Maoon there came yesterday a
sad atory of a married woman's folly
and man’s perfidy, which ended in the j
breaking up of a happy home and the
death in disgrace of the woman. Hhe
had lived in a happy home in a little
town not far distant from Americas.
Her husband was away, when a plansi- j
ble scoundrel came into her little homr,
defying it, and bringing ruin unto all.
She, infatuated with her new found
friend, left home with him. In MaooD,a
week ago, the oifcy physician was called
to gfhe bedside {of a woman neglected
and near to death. She was at a house
near the Southern depot. Twins had
been born and both were dead. In her
suffering the woman told the officers
that a man in whom she had trusted had
left her destitute, but she Dever re
vealed his name or her own. For days
she suffered and grew gradually worse
until while under the bare of physicians
and nnrses, who did all in their power
to preserve her life, she told every
thing and died heartbroken.

A report, which ooold not be folly

to the effect that 400 or 500 bome-seek
r ers from the West were to be brought
hare within a short while, their purpose
li being to see the lands and orchards in
0 this seotion of Georgia with the view
8 to buying homes here. This iDforma
lt tion came from passenger agents both
*’ in Montgomery and Savannah, and
’ 8 while nothing is known in Americus of
6 this great movement hither there is
6 evidently some basis for it, coming as
v it did from snch reliable source. It
k was stated that the home-seekers wonld
8 be brought here in parties of fifty,
* weekly, until the entire 500 prospective
Jt buyers of homes had seen Americus
