Patience, perseverance and ready
cash will get the Christmas shop
ping done in due time.
Aren’t you sorry you didn’t take
the Times-Recorder’s advice and
shop early? Look out now at the
crowds and weather.
An exchange suggests that the
man who is in business and cannot
afford to advertise should at least
advertise his business for sale.
Teddy may have thought Con
gressmen would pass the holidays
carefully studying those messages.
He has another think coming.
Onr merchants are showing large
and attractive holiday stocks this
year and will be able to satisfy all
demands of Christmas buyers.
The Atlanta, Birmingham and
Atlantic is preparing to buy $615,-
000 worth of new equipment ior
the Atlanta and Brunswick line.
Labor may enjoy a fat Christ
mas, as the increase for wage
scales for next year, already an
nounced, amount to more than
$100,000,000. •
Living is at Washington the
highest in the land. That’s be
cause the town has to live off Con
gress and the clerks and a fevr
foreigners.
What’s the matter with starting
a movement for 15,000 population
for Americas by 1910. An in
crease of less than 4,000 in three
years is not an impossibility.
Two or three new industries se
cured each year between now and
1910 will make Americus stronger
industrially and will materially in
crease the city's population.
Secretary Shaw issues a warning
that this country is going so fast a
smashup is likely to occur. Still
when you get to going sometimes
it is just as dangerous to stop.
It is predicted that Hawkins
ville will show an increose of one
thousand in population within less
than twelye months af.er the
Western & Cult is completed.
It will not be surprising if the
administration ticket wins in the
insurance election. Their paid
agents were actively at work all
over the country soliciting votes.
Guano dealers and supply mer
chants generally throughout the
country are complaining of poor
collections. This means that many
farmers will not be able to pay out.
So crowded with traffic is it, the
Central Itailway has put an embar
go at Savannah against all classes
of freight except perishables and
livestock until its yards can be
cleared.
Any movement tending to the
advancement of Americus will al
ways receive the support of this pa
per. We are for Americus all the
time, and are firm in the belief
that her future was never brighter
than at the close of the year 1906.
SOUTHERN FAIR IN TnE NORTH
To Cincinnati belongs the credit
of suggesting that in 1907 a South
ern Fair shall be held in that city,
at which shall be exhibited all the
products of the field, the farm and
the shop of the South, in order
that the North may be informed of
the wonderful progress this section
of the country is making and the
great opportunities which the
South offers to settlers from the
Northern States. The suggestion
has been commended so enthusi
astically throughout the North
that a number of cities have al
ready set to work to outbid Cin
cinnati for the honor of securing
the exposition in spite of the fact
that city conceived the idea.
The proposed fair would doubt
less prove an excellent scheme tor
the education of Northern people
in regard to the South, and we are
sure that if they could be convinc
ed of the wisdom of buying lands
in our part of the country they
would be heartily welcomed and
made to feel at home among us.
Our earnest endeavors to induce
foreign immigration are not to be
construed as an expression of pref
erence for them at all over our
own fellow citizens, whether of
Maine or Michigan.
What is most desired is that the
farmers, and the people generally
of the West, should be lully in
formed of the resources and possi
bilities of the South.
Hence there is every reason to
believe that a fair such as that
suggested would prove to be won
derfully instructive and of vast
benefit to the South by arousing
an interest in this section of the
country among a class of people
that the South would be glad in
deed to have as settlers and citi
zens. That a Southern exhibit
would attract the attention of mil
lions of farmers and small manu
facturers in the great West to the
South as it had never been attrac
ted before there can be no doubt,
and the result would be immense
good for this section.
It is now in order for Theodore 1
to dismiss the Supreme Court.
That august body has decided that,
after all, the states have some
rights with w r hich the Federal
Government cannot interfere.
