AMERICUS, GEORGIA, FRIDAY MORNING SEPTEMBER 27, 1907
THEY WANT TOBE A GENERAL
So Colonels Anderson and Obear Are Accused of
hustling to Get The Votes.
SAVANNAH, GA., Sept. 26.—(Spec
ial)—Considerable indignation is felt
in military circles here over what is
considered the somewhat unmilitary
like conduct of Colonels Anderson
and Obear, who are accused of solicit
ing the support of military officers
throughout the state for the briga
dier-generalship made vacant by the
recent retirement of Gen. Peter W.
Meld rim, of this city.
It is currently reported in military
circles here that the two . North
Georgia officers are using every ef
fort to enlist votes In their respect
ive interests. This is not only re
sented as hardly professional be
havior, even though there may be no
regulation against solicitation of sup
port, hut as an infringement on the
right of South Georgia.
The greater part of the military ac
tivity of the state lies in South Geor
gia, and it is felt that brigadier gen
eralship should be retained in this
MR. LUCAS IN CHARGE
HERE FOR MILES CO.
Represents Picture Company In
Americus.
Mr. Harry Lucas, recently of Sav
annah, has come to Americus to re
side as the local representative of
Miles Bros., of New York, a great
moving picture supply house, which
will operate the Americus theatre as
a high class moving picture amuse
ment resort this season and on every
night when not in conflict with the
engagement of a theatrical company.
The New York machine and film firm
has leased the Americus Theatre aud
will put on high class moving pic
tures with illustrated songs. Later
vaudeville features will probably be
added and Americus will have its
theater open every night. Miles Bros,
have leased the theatre for the nights
upon which regular attractions are
not booked and Mr. Lucas will have
charge of the New York firm’s af
fairs in this city. The regular attrac
tions will hardly average more than
one or two a week.
BOUGHT INTERESTS
FROM ESTATE
Twenty Acres on Railroad
Fronts Sold.
Messrs. W. C. Barrow and George
Oliver, who owned already twenty
j acres, or one half, the vacant lands
j bounded by Church street, the Cen-
I tral and Seaboard Railways, and
I Muckalee creek on the west side,
| bought yesterday from the Harrold
| estate the remaining one half of twen
ty acres. This body of forty acres is
one of the most valuable vacant tracts
about Americus, either for trucking
or for manufacturing sites. It has
a street frontage of 800 or 1,000 feet,
besides fronting on both lines of rail
way almost an equal distance.
CHOATE’S PLAN
WILL FAIL
THE HAGUE, Sept. 26.—(Special*
—The plan advocated by Choate and
other American commissioners for a
j permanent arbitration court it is
now seen will be definitely rejected
by the conference. Choate has been
cherishing hopes of a change of
sentiment, but the majority sentiment
is irrevocably against the proposition
at least at this time.
COMER CALLS
EXTRA SESSION
__________
MONTGOMERY, ALA., Sept. 26.
| (Special)—Gov. Comer has issued the
j call for an extra session of the legis
lature on November 7. Prohibition
| is not mentioned in the call, and the
| extra session will probably be con-
I fined to the discussion of the state in
| its relation to corporations, and es
| pecially railroads.

section. Col. Wylly, of the Fourth
Regiment, has taken a decided step
in favor of South Georgia uniting on
some officer of this section for the
higher honor, and he has pointed out
that it would be an easy matter to
insure his election if this section
stands together.
Cols. Anderson and Obear it is
claimed are using every influence
possible to secure support from all
over the state for their candidacies.
What grounds there is for this re
mains to be developed. But the fact
that such a charge is made is ex
pected to stimulate South Georgia
military men into new activity to
retain the generalship in this section
of the State. The contest may yet
develop into one of strength between
two great divisions of Georgia. In
military matters it is thought South
Georgia will stand more as a unit than
it has heretofore done in matters po
litical.
AMERICUS READY
WITH ASSISTANCE
Generous Response to the Or
phan’s Call.
I
f Americus good citizens will bear in
mind the fact that tomorrow is “Or
phans Day” in Georgia, the one day
of the year set apart for contributions
to the many homes for the protection
and rearing of unfortunate little
ones,/ bereft of parental protection
and K'ft as a tender charge upon a
humane people. In every city and
town in Georgia a vountary subscrip
tion will be made, and Americus, as
usual, will do well her part. Every
one can contribute a mite towards
some one of these noble institutions,
all of which are in need of help. The
Times-Recorder has not been inform
ed as to who will be in charge of the
subscriptions here, but will gladly re
ceive subscriptions and forward the
amounts to any orphans home desig
nated by the giver. Let everyone help
just a little. Your own children are
well provided for, but there are other
little ones less fortunate.
