Diamonds have enhanced in value, as nearly every one knows, more than
double in the 'ast eight or ten years. The opinion of those who are in a posi
tion to know, is that under natural conditions the maximum price is far from
being attained. Added to the natural conditions, such as thejmines getting
deeper, etc. It is reported that the Deßoers people have obtained control of
Premier Mines, which were the only ones offering even slight competition.., It
is therefore very evident that in the near future you will see prices much in

RICHLAND RESENTED
SHOWMANS ATTACK
Dill Sticker and Citizen
Clash.
AND LIVELY «0W IS THE RESULT
Jamestown Advertising Crowd Stirred
lip a Hornets Nest - Governor
Appealed to But Prisoner
Was fined.
A wellknown citizen of Richland in
Americus a day or two ago told of a
row precipitating there by attaches of
an advertising car, alleging that a
citizen of the town was assaulted and
knocked down because protested
at a burly bill sticker “decorating”
his house with gaudy posters.
It was stated that the paste poster
struck the Richland man first, and
immediately fled to his car and con
cealed himself in a bunk, where the
officer found and arrested him upon
the charge of assault and battery.
When the car passed Americus and
proceeded on to Savannah, the bill
poster gave the Savannah Press an
alleged account of the Richland row,
from their standpoint. The law-abid
ing reputation of the good people of
Richland is so firmly established that
the following story will create a smile.
Here is what the bill stickers said
about it:
Showman’s Story.
“For liveliness the town of Rich
land, in this state, has the Wild and
Wooly West skinned a city block,”
said Special Commissioner W. F.
Thomas of the Jamestown Exposition
while here today.
Mr. Thomas and eighteen assistants
are traveling in a special car all
through the South advertising the
show, and in this way became pain
fully familiar with Richland.
“When we reached Richland yes
day morning our men were out at
once and were tacking banners and
signs advertising the exposition, as is
the custom. One, Mr. C. R. Smith,
was in the act of tacking a sign on
the steps of a ginnery, when he was
assaulted from behind by a man who
hit him in the head with a piece of
scantling.
Smith a Hitter.
“Smith returned the blow with a
good sized punch on the jaw and put
him out of business. Smith, not
wanting any further trouble, return
ed to the car, which was not far
away.
“Well, to make a long story short,
before you could say ‘scat’ the people
of the town turned out en masse,
armed with clubs, brickbats and
about everything else they could get
their hands on, and marching to the
car demanded the man.
“ ‘We want the wan that assaulted
one of our citizens,’ said the leader
of the crowd. ‘Yes, we do, and we are
going to have him,’ the others in the
crowd demanded, while they bran
dished their weapons in a painfully
careless way. Especially were they
careless with the way in which they
handled their guns.
Threatened to Shoot.
“I ordered the doors of the cai
closed and when I did they said they
would shoot the car full of holes if I
did not give up the man. Well, you
know I love that car very much and
I would not have it shot up for any
thing reasonable.
“I began talking to the crowd try
ing to appease them but it was no
use. In the meantime they had dis
connected our car from the passeng
er train and then I knew I was up
against it good and hard. All the
time the bunch was becoming louder,
madder and more noiser than ever.
"They had ropes and chains and
were clamoring for a chance to get at
the man. ‘Let us get at him,’ they
demanded,
“Finally I was assured by some of
the cooler heads that he would not re
ceive any bodily harm, and he was
permitted to go with them to be tried
in the local court. The police officer,
who had on a badge as big as a pLe
plate, took Smith out in chains.
Fined SSO.
“Before we had reached Americus
they had fined him SSO and cost.
Smith didn’t have the money and of
course he was locked up. He did not
like the food, which consisted of corn
bread and water, and he wired for us
to ship him a meal, as he was starv
ing.
“In the meantime I had gotten busy
and had wired Hon. S. R. Fields, of
Cordele, who is one of Georgia’s
Jamestown commissioners, to meet
us at the train in his town. This he
did,, and I explained the case to him
fully. Mr. Fields said he would take
the matter up with the governor at
once, and would see if he could not
have the trouble corrected by the dis-
charge of Smith. I, too. wired the gov
ernor explaining the case, and ap
pealing to him to protect my man.
Smith Let tint.
“I don’t know what the governor
did, but this morning I receved a wire
from Smith stating that he was all
right and had gotten as far as Cor
dele on his way here. He will reach
here tonight and will join us in Co
lumbus tomorrow His fine had been
reduced to sls and costs.
‘“lf I live to be a thousand years
old I will never forget Richland and
the hot reception there.” ,■
