EXCITING WEEK ENDS
WITH SIGH Os RELIEF.
Belief That Monday Will
See Improvement.
NEW YORK, October 26.—(Special) j
—The curtain was rung down at noon
today upon one cf the most exciting!
weeks ever experienced by Wall •
street. It was with a great sigh of
relfef among the monied interests
that the going sounded. By the open
ing of another business clay it is the
general belief among the leaders in
the recovery that affairs will be well
started towards normal conditions.
No failures of importance were re
ported, but the Terminal Bank of
Brooklyn suspended payment. Its
capital is SIOO,OOO with deposits of
$240,000.
As a means to restoring the equili
brium, the Clearing House will issue
certificates to the extent of $50,000,-
000 based on approved collateral. This
plan was first used in 1860.
The National City Bank announces
an engagement of $3,500,000 of gold
from London. It is expected that
$10,000,000 will he brought over, the
exchange rate justifying it. The t
local sub-treasury received $10,000,-
000 from Washington today.
The situation at Pittsburg and
Providence was not given much at
tention as it is thought that the other
banks in those cities can cope with
the trouble. In the latter city the
invoking of the thirty-day rule regard
ing the payment to depositors stop
ped the run.
The stock market showed some
improvement and gave evidence that
the worst had passed. With the sit
uation in the control of J. Pierpont
Morgan and his associates the bank
ing community is confident of a
change for the better at once.
SOLDIERS OF SUMTER
MARCH IN AUGUSTA.
Veterans Going in Numbers
to Reunion.
Camp Sumter 642 of Americus is
again to be placed under obligations
to the Central Railway for the cour
tesy of a special coach and a one cent
rate to Augusta upon the occasion of
the State Veterans reunion November
11th to 15th. Under exisiting condi
tions this reduced rate was scarcely
to be expected, but Commander Dav
enport of Camp Sumter has been noti
fied that a one cent per mile traveled
rate would be allowed and in addition
a special coach placed at Americus
for the party going from this city—
the veterans, Daughters of the Con
tend thefederacy and friends desiring
to attend the great annual reunion
with them. The round trip rate from
Americus will be $4.55, and Comman
der Davenport hopes that Camp Sum
ter and Americus will send a large!
and representative delegation.
CANDIDACY DOES NOT
DEPEND ON OPPONENT
KINGSTON, N. Y„ October 26.
(Special)—Bryan says that his decis
ion as to whether or not he will be a
candidate for the Democratic nomina
tion does not depend op the Republi
can nominee. It had been suggested
that if Roosevelt were the Republican
candidate that Bryan would not care
to enter the list. Bryan thus waves
defiance at the Republican party, col
lectively and individually.

SHOTS WERE FIRED IN
DEFENSE BY OFFICER
Excitement is Created on
Forsyth Street.
I
i '
When Police Officer Redmond at
tempted to arrest a half-drunken ne
gro near the courthouse corner yes
terday afternoon ho r, sisfced, and soon
succeeded in almost wrenching the of-j
fleer’s club from him. In order to sub
due the prisoner and at the same time
protect himself from assault, Officer
Redmond drew his revolver and fired
one shot close to the prisoner’s feet.
This had no effect, and the second shot
cut his clothing although the bullet
did not break the skin, Officer Red
mond not wishing to really shoot him.
At the second fire the negro stumbled
and fell, and was quickly landed in
the barracks. The shooting caused
much excitement and a crowd of sev
eral thousand people, mostly colored,
swarmed about the city hall. May
or Hawkins and Chief of Police
Feagin soon restored complete order
and dispersed the morbid, curious
crowd. The bellicose’ black will be
tried at police court tomorrow.
CENTRAL 0E GEORGIA
. RAILWAY COMPANY.
Adopts Resolutions Upon
Death of U. B. Harrold,
•
The Board of Directors of the Cen
tral of Georgia Railway Company, at
its meeting held at Savannah, Ga., on
the 14th day of October, 1907, unani
mously adopted the following min
utes:
The Board of Directors of the Cen
tral of Georgia Railway Company have
learned with great regret of the death
of Uriah B. Harrold, of Americus, Ga..
who has served on this Board contin
uously from the date of its permanent
organization shortly after the founda
tion of the company.
He was, for many years, a Director
of this Company’s predecessor, the
Central Railroad and Banking Com
pany of Georgia, thus having been
amdtig the oldest, in continuous ser
vice, of all the Beoard.
As man, as merchant, and as citi
zen, he had the respect of all who
came in contact with him. He gave
this company faithful, earnest and
valuable service; and in his death this
Board has suffered a distinct loss.
We desire to place upon record our
high appreciation of his virtues and
our deep sympathy with those who
were near and dear to him.

SESSION’ 0E COURT IS
NEAR TO A FINISH.
May Conclude all Business
Shortly.
j
Two days more, at the greatest, j
will conclude the busiest session of j
the City Court of Americus held in
some time. All civil business, includ
ing a number of important cases in
which large amounts were involved,
was finished a month ago, at which
time Judge Crisp announced that the
trial of the larger number of criminal
case would be postponed one month in
order that the courht proceedings j
might noa interfere with the ga- 1
thering of crops. Last week was de-;
voted entirely to the trial* of misde
meanor cases, and succors j
that Solicitor Zach Childers secured
conVictions in thirty or forty cases j
tried since last Monday, These in- j
eluded all manner of offenses from
pistol lugging to crap shooting, and j
has strongly recruited the ranks of
the Paschal Zonaves. Judge Crisp
will devote two more days to the trial
of such cases, and the docket xVill then
stand cleared until the January quar
terly term of city court.
