The farmers of th'e county are using modern methods of cultivation and it is a common thing for Sumter land to make a bale and a half an 1 even two bales to the acre. A major ity of the farmers use traction engines to pull their plows and obtain good results by plowing deep. But cotton is not king in the county. [The planters believe in diversified crops. Pecan groves are being planted all over the county. Any number of farmers are rapidly con verting the larger part of their farms into groves. The better grade of pecans flourish in the county and it has been found that Sumter county nuts bring , high prices in the markets. Peaches, pears, apples, in fact ev ery kind of fruit is grown to a large extent. , The growing of Alfalfa is fast In coming popular. The farmers aro 1 studying the possibilities of this cro-j and are getting ready for the invasion of the boll weevil by preparing then land for the growth of alfalfa and oth-'*— er forage crops. Oats, wheat, peanuts, tobacco and other crops flourish. Sev eral large truck farms grow vegetables for the city markets. The live stock industry is beginning A Sumter County Barn to claim the attention of the farmers. Sumter county is forging ahead as t factor in the live stock market. Cattle, sheep, and hogs are easy to raise in the county. A man does not have to send to Kentucky or Tennessee to get good horses and mules. Sumter county farmers are importing blooded sires and are breeding their own stock. In spite of the fact that Sumter county land will produce an abundant crop oi anything that will grow in the South, farm land is cheap. While there are farms that have increased in value from $75 an acre to sllO within the last d cade there are still undevelop ed farm lands that can be gotten at a ridiculously low- price.
