TWO-MAN TANKS
NEW INVENTION
NEW YORK, March 22 American
inventive genius which has evolved
two new weapons of war, the “Eagle”
submarine chasers and the “two man
tank” probably will be the determin
ing factors in bringing the war to a
speedy and successful climax, accord
ing to Henry Ford.
The Eagles, according to Ford, will
be turned out in unlimited quantities.
Two Ford plants, ohe on the Rivet-
Rouge, near Detroit and the other in
Jersey, can turn out about a thousand
if necessary in an incredibly short
time. Armed with live-inch guns these
sea hornets will swarm all over the
submarine zone like mosquitoes along
the Jersey coast where they are to be
be constructed. The speed boats are
200 feet long and are standardized.
The two man tanks, the invention
of American army officers, are mina
ture armored tanks, capable of turn-,
ing around as if pivoted and dashing
here and there over a battlefield with
as much freedom as an ordinary in
fantryman. They are a sort of human
machine gun and can g 0 anywhere.

KEPT HER AWAKE
The Terrible Pains in Back and
Sides. Cardui Gave Relief.
'larksville, La.—Mrs. Alice Johnson,
of this place, writes: "For one year 1
suffered with an awful misery in my back
and sides. My left side was hurting me
all the time. The misery was something
awful.
1 could not do anything, not even sleep
at night, it kept me awake most of the
night... I took different medicines, but
nothing did me any good or relieved me
until I took Cardui. . .
I was not able to do any of my work
for one year and I got worse all the time,
was confined to my bed off and on. 1 got
so bad with my back that when 1 stooped
down I was not able to straighten up
again ... I decided I would try Cardui
... By time 1 had taken the entire bottle
I was feeling pretty good and could
straighten up and my pains were nearly
all gone.
1 shall always praise Cardui. 1 con
tinued taking it until 1 was strong and
well.” If you suffer from pains due to
female complaints, Cardui may be just
wliat you need. Thousands of women
who once suffered it: this way now praise.
Cardui for their present gr ad health.
Give it a trial. NC-133

SHIPS CUT IN TWO
BY A JEW METHOD
CLEVELAND. 0., March 22. —Four
bulk freight steamers have been taken
over by the United States Shipbuilding
Board for delivery on the Atlantic
coast by March 15, and fourteen more
will probably be added to the list soon,
according to present plans. These
boats boats will be cut in two at dif
ferent yards on the lakes for passage
through the Welland Canal.
Twenty-one of the old steamers of
the lakes have already been taken to
the ocean by United Staes governmen*
fr help releieve the war needs for
shipping. Os these sixteen were too
long to pass through the locks between
the laes and the ocean and had to be
cut in two. Two methods were fol
lowed in this work.
Four of the shtpe were cut in two
for the purpose of rejoining them in
d-ydock. In this operation the rivets
are cut out or burned out in such a
manner as to separate the ship in an
irregualr line, following the shape
of the plates. When this work had
been completed and all pipes and
wires severed, the two pieces of the
ship were pulled apart in the drydock
on skids.
The remaining twelve ships were
cut by a new method. In this plan
the ships were cut across in a straight
line using butts between plates wehe*’
possible and cutting the plates them
selves with a burning torch where the
butts did not come in line. After the
ships had thus been cut, a heavy
steel strap four feet wide was fitted
around the cut and punched with
holes for four rows of rivets on each
side of the cut. The strap plates were
bolted in position and the plating of
the ship drilled for the rivets.
