THE AMERICUS HMES-RECORDEIL
HEROIC WOMEN OF FRANCE
My words are not powerful enough
to do even scanty justice to the most
heroic figure in the modern world, and
of ages past—the woman of France.
Os the healthy men who are engaged
in military service in France, practi
cally all are engaged either in trans
portation or in the manufacture of
munitions, leaving the agriculture ab
solutely to the women. Not only this,
but they have stepped into the place
of work animals; you can go into any
section of France today and see wo
men of magnificent, noble womanhood
hitched to the plough and cultivating
the soil. All of the agriculture rests
upon their shoulders. The home, al
ways an extreemly efficient home
maintains a few old men, the wounded,
and the tubercular. Uncomplaining,
with high devotion, with an attitude
FEWER STRIKES IN
GREAT BRITAIN NOW
LONDON, March 25.—There are now
fewer strikes in Great Britain than at
any period since the war began, says
an official report to Parliament on the
labor situation. The report says in
part:
“The soundness of the labor situation
in this country i s really remarkable,
considering the larger issues involved
and the millions of men affected. Af
ter three and a half years of war the
great body of laboring men are still
working with a steady devotion never
Known before in this country.”
Winston Churchill, in a statement
supplementing the report, sai<i that
the labor situation was so food that
the secret service department in the
Ministry of Munitions had been abol
ished an<f the ministry now has na
secret agents of any kind. “The wide
spread and unswerving loyalty and
resolution with which the production
of munitions is being maintained is
shown by the fact that the time lost
in all branches of our work during
the last six months has been less than
one-fourth of one per cent,” he added
that amounts almost to religious ex
altation, the woman of France bears
the burden.
Now, conditions being as they are.
does it lie within the heart of the
American people to preserve and hold
to every convenience of our life at the
expense of adding an additional bur
den t 0 the womanhood of France?
This is the exact question that is in
volved in our substitution of other se
reals in place of wheat.
The women of France must be ena
bled to hold up the morale of the
trench soldier until next spring. The
morale of the house decides the morale
of the soldier in the fighting line. eW
can do this by giving to them the
greatest possible freedom in their food
supply, and of ths. wheat is the chief
factor.

UTI-MMfT GUNS
GREAT LAKES 111. Mareh 25.—T0
give the men at the Naval Training
station here t Tactical instruction in
the manipulation of anti-aircraft guns,
the Navy Department has authorized
the installation of a three-inch, fifty
caibre. anti-aircraft battery. This a n
nouncement is made in the Great
Lakes Bulletin, the new daily paper
edited and printed by the sailors.
Present intentions are to mount the
guns on the lake front so that n en
can be trained by target practice at
captive balloons and box kites. For
drill purposes, in connection with avi
ators at the station, it is planned to
have airplanes make day and night
“attacks.” All guns will be fully
manned, ready for instant action when
an airplane put. g in an appearance.
The crew of the searchlight station
will be constantly in readiness to pick
up airplanes making a “night in
vasion.”
Airplane detectors, similar to those
used at the European battle fronts.
are being installed, and experiments
with types of projectiles for attacking
airplanes will be carried on.
Another innovation about to be
adopted is a “land battleship,’' equip
ped with modern appliances for the.
destruction of submarines. The ship
has been built upon the lake front and
will be equipped \vith the fire control
and searchlight installations in use on
the latest type American battleships.
A cage mast and a battery of three
inch, fifty calibre guns will be mount
ed for use in target practice. As a
result of the “landship” training, men
will be qualified for gun positions
when they leave the station. The ship
was planned by Captain W. A. Moffett,
station commander, and Lieutenant-
Commander Chester S. Roberts, ex
ecutive officer.
