NEW COUNCIL IN
FOR NEW YEAR
Committee Assignments
Delayed, But New
Member Gets Job
The old city council died and the
new council was born last night at
the last meeting of the city body of
the old year. But in the change
there is only one new face in coun-I
cil, R. L. Allison taking the seat of i
Reese H. Horton, whose term had I
expired and who was not a candidate I
for re-election. Mr. Allison and J. ,
E. Poole, re-elected, were sworn in i
by Judge Littlejohn, of the Superior !
Court, who has for years been offi- ‘
dating at this ceremony; V’ E. Tay- 1
lor, also le-elected, was not present
and will take the oath of office at a
later date.
In retiring Mr. Horton made a
graceful speech to his collegues.
“I fought, bled and died with
you rWB four years,” he said, ad
dressing the other members of the
body, ‘‘and. it is only business rea
sons that cause me to leave you now.
I have enjoyed my experience here,
and it has been a great source of
education to me as well, for I have
learned things I never would have
known had I not been a member of
this body. I regret that I cannot

serve on, but my work, which is my
livelihood, takes me away from
Americus a great deal of the time,
and I think you all understand that
this is the reason why I have been
unable to attend more meetings dur
ing the past year. I want to thank
the council and the other city offi
cials for the many kindnesses and
courtesies extended to me white I
was a member of this body.”
Mayor Sheppard responded briefly
to Mr. Horton’s farewell, declaring
that it was regretted by the council
that officials relations with him must
cease, assuring him that it was well
understood why he had been unable
to be present oftener in recent
months and extending him best
wishes for the future.
Following the administering of the
oath to Messrs. Poole and Allison,
Mayor Sh’eppard announced that he
was unprepared to make committee
assignments at this meeting, but
did State that, at the earnest request
of Aiderman Taylor that he be re
lived during the coming year of the
chairmanship of the streets commit
tee, he would appoint Mr. Allison
chairman ad interim of this commit
tee, to serve until committee desig
nations are announced. He also in
structed the old ordinance commit
tee to prepare and report at the next
meeting, which will be on New
Year’s night, a special license ordi
nance for the coming year.
