MASONS MAKE
FRIDAY BIG DAY
Many Nearby Lodges
Represented at Con
ferring of Degree
Masons representing every lodge
in this section of Georgia gathered
here Friday afternoon to witness an
exemplification of the master’s de
gree by the Americus degree team,
which is composed of members of
Americus Lodge No. 13, and M. ».
Council Lodge No. 95. Both the
Americus lodges have long been (
prominent in fraternal activities, and
have perfected the degree work until
their officers are often invited to visit
nearby lodges to participate in the
conferring of degrees. .
The occasion Friday was especially
arranged in compliment to the sev
eral lodges in this section, invitations,
being extended the lodges at Buena
Vista, Ellaville, Plains, DeSoto, Wes
ton, Smithville. Oglethorpe, Richland
and Rochelle,’all of which sent rep
resentatives here.
Eleven candidates received the
master’s degree, and at the conclu
sion of the secret work the Masons
and their guests adjourned to the lot
adjoining the Planters Bank build
ing, where a bountiful spread had
been prepared, and this was enjoyed
by all. In addition to the lodges
above named, Masons were here from
Andersonville and several othet
towns where there are no lodges lo*
cated, and a number of traveling
men who were Masons and who were
spending the day here, were guests
of the Americus lodges.

on Turner Place. When he entered
the room he claims the man began
to shoot. The stranger is alleged to
have made a hurried exit through a

TO TEST POISON
WEEVIL SPRAY
23-Acre Plot Selected {
For New Liquid
Preparation
Mrs. Victoria Thompson, of Jack
sonville, Fla., who claims to have per
fected a liquid spray which will de
stroy the boll weevil, has arranged
to experiment with her product in
Sumter county, and 23 acres belong
i ing to Neill A. Ray on the Dixie high
way near Americus, has been selected
'as a test plat.
A quantity of specially designed
machinery, to be used in spraying
the cotton plants, has arrived, and
will be set up under direction of Mrs.
Thompson Tuesday. The first spray
ing will take place one day next
week, or as soon as the first larvae
of the hibernated weevils is hatched
out.
The spraying of the test plat will
be done under the eye of George O.
Marshall, who is observing the ex
periment as a representative of Sum
ter county’s farming interests as well
well as representative of the federal
department of agriculture.
The test plat has already been
measured off and plainly marked, and
accurate records will be kept of the
production there as well as the cost
of spraying and cultivation, in order
to demonstrate the exact worth of
the spray, which it is proposed to
. offer the public’ next year, should
" its application prove practicable.
The poison contained in the spray
is a secret of Mrs. Thompson’s, but
i it is asserted the spray has a base
of syrup or glucose, this giving it a
sticky quality which causes the poi
son to cling to the cotton plant dur
ing wet weather as well as during
sunny periods. ,
