Hoke Smith Approves
Democratic Platform
ATLANTA, Ju'y 6. —“As a whole,
I believe the platform adopted at
San Francisc .v 11 receive the approv
al of the Democrats of the country
None can expect to have such a
document just what he wishes. Even
the committee on resolutions differed
on a number of provisions and a part
of them voted against provisions that
were adopted.”
Thus spoke U. S. Senator Hoke
Smith of Georgia, yesterday in dis
cussing the Democratic platform at
San Francisco.
“I am especially pleased with the
provisions upon taxation, labor and
agriculture,” continued Senator
Smith.
“The Republicans in the last con
gress can not defend their action in
cqtting appropriations to the depart
ment of agriculture. We increased
the appropriations in the senate but
were unablfe to induce the house con
feres to give all the increases adopt
.ed in the senate.,
“I actively supported all the agri
cultural measures whi :h the platform
commend. The Smith-Lever till J
prepared with the aid of a commit
tee from the College of A rriculture
and sent it over to Mr. Lever after
I had introduced it in the senate.
“The bill creating a market divis
ion in the department of agriculture
originated with the officers of the
Farmers Union of Georgia, and at
their instance I put it through the
senate.
“The -provision with reference to
the league of nations contains a large
amount of rhetoric, but when we get
down to the definite statement with
reference to what it to be done, it
recognizes The necessity for substan
tial reservations.”
