Horace F. Taylor, chief engineer
of the Rome fire department, has
been appointed chief of the depart
ment to succeed Albert Sharp, who
has resigned to become state fire
marshall.
The city tax rate of Rome was
fixed at $1.50, a slight raise, for
the coming year at a meeting of the
city commission Thursday.
E. R. Conant, for a number of
years a resident of Brunswick, has
been appointed city manager oi
Mansfield, Mass.
The Grady county superior court
returned an indictment charging
murder and another charging a;
sault with intent to murder again. I

Moultrie conperns have brought
suit against W. D. Powell as eon
tractor and the board of trustees ot
the Ty Ty consolidated school, anil
have asked Judge W. E. Thomas to
appoint a receiver for the school
district. The suit was brought to
collect money due the Moultrie con
cerns for material used in the con
struction of the Ty Ty district
building.
The home of G. Van Landingham
of Caldosta, and all contents were
destroyed by fire Tuesday. The
family narrowly escaped, waking up
as the roof was falling in.

press Compan will be opened in Vai
dosta Mdy 1.
W. A. Bruce, of Valdosta, states
that there are several carloads oi
cabbage on his plant farm near
Valdosta that the public can have a;
any time. There are forty acres
covered in cabbage that are good tr
eat but are not in shape to ship.
At a meeting of the South Cobb
County Voters’ League Thursday
resolutions protesting the raise in
telephone rates were adopted and a
ctpy sent to the railroad commis
sion.’
The Atlanta Chapter Daughters
of the Confederacy have unanimous
ly adopted resolutions indorsing the
administration of Woodrow Wilson
and elected him an honorary mem
ber of the chapter.

R. R. Niendorf, prize fighter, is in
a Savannah hospital with serious in
juries inflicted by a footpad with
whom he had engaged in a fight after
the footpad had tried to rob him.
Niendorf was struck on the head with
a blackjack.
Mayor Peacock, of Albany, plead
ed for the commission form of gov
ernment for Albany at a meeting of
the Albany Kiwanis’Club Wednesday.
Twelve men have been picked by
Columbus authorities to act as a vice
squad and conduct the clean-up cam
paign against vice in Columbus and
Muscogee county. The city council
of Columbus has appropriated $5,000
for use in the campaign.
The office of General Superin
tendent of the Seaboard Air Line hqs
been abolished and H. W. Purvis, of
Savannah, who has held that position,
has; been transferred to Norfolk
where he will engage in special work
for the road.
W. J. Anderson, roadmaster of the
A. C. L., was instantly killed Thurs
day when he missed his footing as he
attempted to board a moving train
