to look beautiful on the screen
Although Pola Negri is univer
sally acclaimed one of the screen’s
greatest beauties, her chief arti
i tion is to master every detail of her
i art.
i “Never mind what 1 ;ok like so
I long as what I do appears convim.’-
I ir.g,” she tells the cameraman be
; fore starting work in a scene.
In “Lily of the Dust,” her latest
starring picture for Paramount,' pro
duced by Dimitri Buchowetzki, with
Ben Lyon, Noah Beerv and Ray
mond Griffith heading the support
ing cast, Pola plays a scene where
fear is the dominant note. She
made no effort to impress the cun
era with her beauty but gave herself
I up to the emotions of fear.
i “Because of this ability to forget,
, self in her art, Pola Negri is ab'e to
| achieve remarkable realism,” de
' | dared Buchowetzki. “Her role in
‘Lily of the Dtist’ is td my mind one
of the most amazing things she has
ever accomplished.”

COOLIDGE OPPOSES
RAILWAY WAGE CUTS
WASHINGTON, Nov. 22.—Pres
ident Coolidge feels that if a reduc
tion of freight rate sis made at this
time, it should be nccomplisbed
through reduction in operating costs
rather than at the expense of wages
of railroad employees.
Present conditions, in the opinion
of the president, do not warrant a
reduction in railroad wages, where
as he does believe sufficient eco
nomies can be made in operating
expenses to permit a reduction in
freight rates, if such is found feas
ible.
