SO PAPER NEXT WEEK.
Wishing to give ourselves and
our readers a holiday, we shall
issue no paper next week. We
hope the holidays may bring to us
all a Merry Christmas and a Hap.
py Hew Year.
A FAIR DEAL.
The Ricoedzu Gift Distribution
will be conducted this year as it
was last year. The number oi every
advance paying subscriber will be
written upon a ticket and this tick*
ct placed in an envelope and sealed
■pi These envelopes will then be
placed in a box and thoroughly
mixed up. The names of the gifts
will be written on tickets and each
placed in a. separate and sealed on-
velopc, the envelopes placed in a
box. Two or more persons will
then be selected by the subscribers
present, one of whom will draw an
envelope from the box containing
the numbered tickets, while anoth
er will draw an envelope from tbo
box containing the names of the
prises. The number thus drawn
will be entitled to the prize drawn
at the same-time, and so on until
all the prizes are drawn. The draw
ing is left in the hands of our
subscribers and we cannot know to
whom the prizes will fall, as we
have no control whatever and do
not handle the tlokots after they
ore sealed. We do not even know
who will be selected to conduct
the drawing. We propose to do
everything fair, give all our patrons
am equal ebanoe, and so conduct
our • distribution as to make it an
honest transaction.
We have received the flrst two
numbers of the Brunswick Semi*
Weekly Herald, published by Mr.
J. B. Bingham, lately of Memphis,
Tenn. The Herald starts ont on a
lively gait and with a prospect of
success, Brunswick is amply able
to support two papers and we hope
to see the Herald prosper and its
editor grow fat.
A colored dramatic company ap
peared at Vicksburg, Michigan, the
other day. All the hotels refused
them accommodations and they
wore obliged take a freight train
for Kalamazoo. And this, too, np
in God’s country.
A Philadelphia paper says that
a recent census of Southern editors
shows two captains, seventeen ma
jors, seven generals and 1,826 col®,
nets.
The Kecojideb Gift Distribution
will take place at the Opera House
on Wednesday, January 2, 1884,
at 1 o’clock p. m.
LAST CHANCE.
. We would again call the atten
tion ef our readers to the fact that
the Recobueb Gift Distribution
will positively take place on Wcd-
ncaday, January 2, 1884, and only
a little over a week remains in
wbioh to seeuro a chance in tbo
distribution. Wo should like to
see every subscriber represented
in the distribution, and there is no
reason why they should not be, as
ail that is pcccssary is to pay up
all arrearages and one year In ad
vmnee. The paper U worth the
money and the gifts to be distrib
uted are useful and valuable. Lost
year many wero disappointed be
came they forgot to renew their
aubaeriptlona In time. Don’t neg
leet it this time. You can pay your
oubaeription now as well as at any
time, and you may thereby
i a gift worth many times the
money you have expended.
The clergymen of Joliet, I1L, in
a fraternal meeting held leet week
(for the clergy do fraternize some
times) pasted a resolution denounc
ing Sunday papers, and advising
Christian people neither to adver
tise in, take nor read any paper is-
sued on Sunday. These olorgymen
might have learned at aome printing
office in Joliet that the work on pa
pers published Sunday morning is
nesrly or quite all done on Saturday
before midnight; whereas, the work
on a paper published on Monday
morning would have to be done on
Sunday, if it contained the latest
Joseph Holland,of Madison, rais
ed a crop ot oats upon a piece of
ground about an acre in extent,
realixing a crop of 76 bushels. He
then planted the lot in corn, and
from it io November gathered a
tine crop of corn, making 40 bushels,
and when the eorn was gathered
the oats bad again covered the
ground and were two feet high, a
luxuriant growth over the whole
field. He pastured them down and
now there is a good stand for the
coming summer. The cort was
merely nominal.
How Will Carclton Wrote Hit Poems.
“Under wlint circumstances was
your poem, 'Over the Hills to the
Poor House,’ written ?”
“While at school I was interest
ed in visiting the almshouse and
chatting wiih the paupers. Among
the acquaintances I made there
were two very worthy pcoplo whose
children had' abandoned them in
their old age. The father told me
bis story. The details were not, of
course, the same as related in the
poem, but in them was the idea af
terward elaborated.”
“Did it not have a strong moral
effect?’’
“It did; it was published in Har
per’ Weekly at the time, with il
lustrations. In two months a friend
wrote me that the verses had pro.
(lured on him such an affect that
lie immediately sunt a check for
$100 to his parents, whom be
thought bad been by him too much
neglected. I have heard of cases
where people have been taken out
of tbo poorhotise by penitent chil
dren. In this connection I might
instance the case of an old man who
died a pauper at Cleveland. When
his satchel was opened and its
meagre contents exsmined a copy
of the poem was found carefully
rolled up. From these and numer
ous other affecting inoidents, I be
lieve that the poem lias done some
good. 'Betsy and I are out’ has
come back to me at num tmw times.
When stopping at a hotel in a largo
city recently the proprietor come
up to me, and in a very demonstra
tive manner, told me that tlioso
verses were the tncuns of reuniting
himself and his wife.”—Denver
Tribune.
