Probably there will be t pretty

Tbe independent movement has
struck Iowa like a cyclone. The
reports from all directions are dc-
cidedly stunning. The oldest in-
habitant never saw anything like
it. It afTccls small towns as well
as large ones.
The oldest democrat in the coun
try is Captain Jolham Johnson, of
South Durham. Me., horn Septum

live long enough to vote for Grover
Cleveland, for n second term if
necessary.
The President of the Des Moines

500 Republicans in that city will

that number have already signed

they are playing that bluff game
for all it is worth. They brag that
they have bought up the Irish vote.
The indications are that the
Republican ticket in New Vork will
be snowed under.
It has been charged over and
over again tlint Blaine is one of
Gould’s agents. Mr. Edmunds, it
is said, recently wrote thus to a
friend: “It is my deliberate opin
ion that Mr. Blaine nuts as the at
torney of Jay Gould. Whenever
Mr. Thurman and I have settled
upon legislation to bring the Pncif-
16 rail loads to terms of equity with
the Government, up has jumped
James G. Blaine, musket in hand,

Americas would be hostile to any
man from Schley, if presented to
the Senatorial Convention, for
nomination. I could not believe
the (teople of Sumter to be so un
just as to enjoy a right when it
was their time, and then be indif
ferent to others in their turn.
Therefore, being a citizen of
Schley, and my interest being
equally identified with my fellow
citizens, in the preservation of their
right to furnish some suitable mau
to represent the 13th Senatorial
District in the next General Assem
bly', I endeavored one day (last
week to investigate and learn the
feelings that the Americus people
entertained toward the citizens of
Schley.
Now my friends, i am satisfied
that the sympathies of the Ameri
cus people arc deeply concerned
for our interest, and seek not to
injure us, neither morally or polit
ically.
There is no domineering spirit of
boasted numbers or pre-eminence
of intellect; they only claim the
right to a voice with their contem
poraries in the selection of one
man from the many well qualified
citizens of Schley county to repre
sent the whole district.

The following items from the
Albany Medium contain a few
bints which tbe business men cf
Americus would do well to heed:
In cultivating friendly relations
with neighboring counties, Albany
insurcs her own prosperity.
The merchants of Albany are
marc vitally interested in an ami
cable settlement of the rotation
system question in this Senatorial
District than any other. Dougher
ty's attitude—or thalofsomeoflier
politicians, which is charged up
lo her by Worth andJLee—in the
last convention injured Albany’s
trade with those counties not a
little. Politicians, as n general
thing, do not look beyond their
own [ict schemes for securing of
fice for themselves or friends; and.
ns in Lha above case, they some
time-> work serious injury to other
interests, which are of vastly more
importance to the community than
the empty honor of naming a State
Senator.

Longevity efTrera.
According to the estimates of
botanists, trees are capable of very
long life. Do Candolle gave the
nge of an elm at 335 years. The
age of some palms have been sot
down at from 000 to 700 years; that
of an olive treo at 700 years, of a
plane tien at 720, 01 a cedar at 800,
of an oak at 1,500, of n yew at 2,-
880, ol n axoditim at 4.000, and of
a baobab tree' at 5,000 years.—
