of building lots at the distribution
of the Brooklyn Heights property,
sold them yesterday, makiug
handsome profit on his purchase.
A. Now Ice Factory.
Au effort is being made Dy parties
in the city to erect a new Ice works.
A number of our citizeus have al
ready taken stock in the en
terprise, and from the present out
look it may be considered an assur
ed fact.
Another Engine.
The S. A, M. road has received
another new engine. It is number
ed 116, and named Dupont Guerry,
for Col. Dupont Guerry, of Macon.
It is an • eight wheeler and was
built by the Baldwin Locomotive
Works. The road also lias a new
engine in Atlanta, on exhibition at
the exposition, which was built by
the Rhode Island Works.
Water Works. • ✓ ■
The work of extending the water
works to Leetoii is being rapidly
accomplished. The pipe has been
laid along the side of the road for
quite a distance, but as the force of
hands were at work on the water,
works extension to Brooklyn
Heights) the work bt jointing the
pipe and ({lacing it underground
was delayed. The work is uow be,
ing rapidly pushed to completion.
HIS ACCOUNTS SHORT.
A SINGER SEWING MACHINE AGENT
FOUND SHORT.
An Investigation, Which Has Been
Hade, Dlacloaeathe Facta in the Caae,
Tho New Temple.
Arrangements are about complet
ed for the erection of the Masonio
temple. We learn that a promin
ent gentleman in the city proposes
gelling tho Masons the ground at a
nominal sum and then erect them
three-story building for a ball,
offices and store looms, and take
bonds, payable la twenty years for
the same. The Masons cau almost
see their way clearly.
A Bold Shooter.
On Thursday evening lastjust as
the passenger on the S. A. M. road
was passing through a cut at Tif-
fet’s Mill, a man ran up to the side
of the road and shot twice at the
passing train. The drat shot struck
the cab of the engine, while the
second crashed into the passenger
coach. It was a bold attempt to
takethelife of some one, It Is not
known who.
A Serious Runaway.
Mr. G. W. Wiggins, a prominent
planter of this county, who lives
nearSumter city, while on his. way
home from this city to day, where
he had been on business, was
thrown from bis buggy by his mule
running away, and waB painfully
bnt not seriously injured. The
male tore the buggy to pieces. As
the buggy was a new one its loss
was quite an item.
Artesian Water Btopped.
Yesterday and the day before the
citizens of Americas have been
compelled to,do without artesian
water. A “nut” on the “plunger”
to the pump broke off in aucb a way
that the “plunger” was caught,
and aa it had to be pulled out by
main force, ‘it was necessary to
spend considerable time in getting
it out. Supt. Charlie Hawkins In
formed a reporter late yesterday
evening that the pump would be
ready for work about ten o’clock to
day. The water Is greatly missed
When it cannot be bad.
A Beautiful Residence.
We were shown yesterday, by
Mr. Waj. Hall, plans of a.new resi
dence tor Mr. W. E. Murphey.
They were^ drawn by Mr. G. L.
Norrman, of Atlanta. It is of the
colonial style, two Btcry, with
pretty alcoyes' and verandahs. If
it is built as the plans direct it wilt
cost about $16,000.
'Mr. Norrman has made an envia
ble reputation in.Americus as an
architect of marked ability. A
proof of this assertion is that when
plans of a public or private building
are wanted hetft notified. He has
established a branch office in this
city with Mr. Wm. Hall as man
ager. Mr. Hall is already well
known to 6or people.
Several days ago Mr. B. D. Arm
strong, of Macon, general agent
for Southwest Georgia of the Sing
er Sewing Machine Company, ar
rived in the city.
Seeing him and several other
sewing machine agents in the city,
a reporter thought that maybe
something was wrong and called
upon Mr. Armstrong and asked
what was tile matter.
Mr. Armstrong visits the offices
under his supervision about once
a year, and aa nothing serious had
developed in this city Mr. Arm
strong informed tho reporter that
he was only attending to his regu
lar auuual iuspectiou. Though the
reporter had very atroug grounds
for suspicion, yet as he could not
furnish any positive proofs, he did
not mention this for fear of wrong
ing some innocent party.
Later developments, however,
show that the object of his visit
was to look over the accounts of
Mr. J. S. Royal, the agent here, as
Mr. Royal was suspected of being
in arrears and making false reports
to the company.
The first intimation Air. Arm
strong had ot Royal’s shortage
come through the refusal of parties
in Mr. Royal’s territory to pay bills.
He therefore sent a gentleman to
assist Mr. Royal aud at the same
time to watch for anything wrong
on the part of Mr. Royal.
A short while back the special
agent notified Mr. Armstrong that
something was wrong. Upon re
ceiving this information Mr. Arm
strong came here to personally in
vestigate Mr, Royal’s accounts.
Upon investigation Mr. Royal
was found to be $1,200.51 short, in
his accounts to the company. Of
this amount Mr. Royal has paid
hack $424.
Tho deficit,'which has been grow,
ing for twelve or eighteen months
had been very neatly covered up,
and a very thorough investigation
was necessary to uncover his work,
The Americus office is tho dis
tributing point for all the neighbor
ing towns, and all the branch of
fices made their reports to Mr,
Royal, who incorporated them in
his reports to Air Armstrong.
Tlie reports and accounts of the
sub-agents were found to be cor
rect,
Air. Royal was raised in Taylor
county and has been with the
Singer company since 1880.
He assumed the management of
the Americus office in February,
1888.
Air. Thomos M. Atoore, of War
saw, N. C., who has been assisting
Air. Royal in the office for some
timo, has been appointed tgent iu
Mr. Royal’s place.
Mr. Roypl has been given until
Saturday night to make good the
deficit before Mr. Armstrong will
report it to the company.

Being Rapidly Accomplished.
THE COMMITTEE REPORTS
They Find the Organisation of a Big
Company Impossible at Present
It will be remembered that eome
weeks since a meeting ot citizens
was held, which passed a resolu
tion favoring the organization of t
company which might consolidate
the real estate interests of the city
and promote general prosperity,
and that the undersigned were ap
pointed a committee to ask for
prices of unimproved real estate,
and ascertain and report whether
such purpose could be accomplish
ed.
- This commltco doos not deem it
necessary to call a meeting ot citi
zens and report thereto, but begs to
say through this medium that we
had fondly hoped for greater en
couragement from property owners
than we have received. While all
Beemed to favor the scheme, th$
difficulty lies in holding property
at prices in many cases fabulously
high.
The committee thinks that own
ers of unimproved property could
well afford to pool their property at
moderate value and take stock for
same, with assurance that the
stock of the Company would ad
vance far more rapidly than the
real estate represented thereby pos
sibly could do in the absence of i he
stimulation to values resulting
from organized efforts.
Havingfalled to secure such reas
onable price* oif unimproved real
estate as would in our judgment au
thorize the formation of the Com
pany contemplated on a basis of
justice to those who might he asked
to subscribe to the stock of that
Company, we see nothing more we
can do, exoept to express our sin
cere regret at the failure.
Respectfully,
B. P. Hollis,
H. C. Baolev,
W. M. Hawkes,
8. H. Hawkins,
Arthur Rylandeh,
Committee,
The new Baptist church building,
now in process of erection, is rapid
ly assuming beautiful proportions,
both inside and out.
There are few churches of dn
equal size to this -one that are as
beautifully proportioned and as
handsome throughout.
The expert architects, Alessrs.
Bruce & Morgan, who made the
plans for the building, have never
executed a more beautiful piece of
architecture for a church building
of a similar size. The mere men
tion of the nameof this firm of ar
chitects is a sufficient guarantee of
the efficiency aud beauty with
which the plans were executed
The Macon Door, Sash and Lum
ber Company have the contract for
erecting the structure, aud are mak
ing great efforts to have the build
ing substantial as well as beautiful,
Messrs. Haynes, Spencer & Co.,
^>f Richmond, Ind., have the con
tract for the pews and interior fur
nishiugs, which will be of beauti
ful antique oak. The ladies of the
church have undertaken this work,
and have already raised about oue
thousand dollars for thU purpose.
The contract for stained glass
windows has not yet been let, but
will probably be given out at an
date.
The system of steam heatiug to
bo used in this building cannot be
improved on. The building com
mittee is composed of S. H. Hawk
ins, ebairmap, Messrs. John Wind
sor, M. Calloway.-R. T. Byrd an‘d
Thornton Wheatley. Mr. Wheat-
ley is secretary of the building
committee, and baa devoted a great
deal of his time and attention to
the building of this house of wor
ship.
Work on the building commenc
ed last May and tho corner stone
was laid in Juno.
The church will probahly bo fini
ished and ready for occupancy
some time in January.
The good people of tile church are
now accomplishing t» great under
taking,and should be congratulated
Upon being able to so successfully
push the erection of this church to
it completion.
