The party panned through Amer
icus yesterday on tlielr way to Al
bany and two of the party stopped
over In Americus.
In Albany they were met at the
depot by a brass band, and were
given a reception last night.
The two who stopped over here
are Mr. Harry Kisser, of Kpanker,
a house buildor, and Mr. W. L.
I.andis, of Kinsey, a nurseryman.
Both were seen by a reporter, and
they seem delighted with their trip
and tile couutry. With Americus
they are especially pleased, and
while they will return to their
homes in Ohio soon, they expect to
return and settle.
They are of the kind that make
good and progressive citizens, and
It is hoped that they will settle
here. They will be here to-day,
and olosely look over the city.

Can’t Americus get a paid lire

If not, can’t something be done
to give us better protection?
The citizens waul something

They say that the city is spread

They have been kicking ui u» “
for some time, and think it lone
that the city pay some attention to
tlie matter.
The kick is a just one, and one
that should be remedied iu time to
save property.
As it stands now, if a lire breaks
out at any distance from the court
house, there is no chance to save it,
and little to save the surrounding
buildings.
Suppose, for instance, some dwel
ling out on I.ee street is discovered
afire, with just a mere start. The
discoverers yell fire, which is heard
and passed from mouth to mouth
down the line until iu the course of
many precious minutes the cry
reaches the husiitess part of the
city. Then somebody rings the
fire bell in the court house. The

day was spent in visiting the vari
ous peach orchards and table lands
of this section. Many in the party
have visited Fort Valley before,
but their admiration as well as es
timation of the place and section
grow with each visit. Those whoso
first visit this Ib, say that not one
thing has been misrepresented to
them regarding this section, the
fruit paradise of Georgia. They
are bold in saying that the pictures
painted to them regarding the
marvelous resources of Houston
county do not begin to do this sec
tion Justice, and that the half was
hot .ii . lo them until the.,
actually beheld the earthly promis
ed land within their own eyes.
Many of the party, who do not own
any lauds, but .promised to buy if
things were as represented, say the
truth will prevail and that they
feel iu honor bound, after a full
view of everything, to Invest some
money in lands which they have
instructed their Georgia agent,
Captain J. B. James, to buy for
them as soon as be can, unless
prices are advanced over what they
are at present.
“The Albaugh fruit frrut is iu ex
cellent conditioh, aud the Ohio
owners are delighted with the way
they have found things. Owing to
the trees being to young to bear
this year, this enormous farm will
be planted in melons the coming
season for tile Ohio markets, null
tlie parties interested who reside in
Ohio will manage the sales from the
vast farm themselves, thus insur
ing the best returns possible, which
is sure to make this feature a finan
cial success. The directors of this
company held an Important meet

possible, and after a great deal of
tugging one or two of the reels aro
gotten out.
But where is the fire? Some
says oue way, some another, until
finally the right directiou is found.
Usually this directiou can’t bo
determined until all the building is
ablaze aud the light tells in which
direction to go. And then to get
there. A half or three-quarters of
a mile pull, with a few euergetio
members ahold of the rope, can’t be
made in a minute, aud by the time
all these things have been gone
through, there i" mighty little
cllaUCC ul saving ill. ..... iu!..
The men wuo compose Hie com
pose the companies arc tried aud
true, and It Is not their fault. With
the apperati they have, and the
means of ascertaining the where
abouts of a fire, no more call be ex
pected of them.
However, the city is responsible,
and should add to the department
in some way. If we are yet too
small for a paid fire department, we
certainly are not to have an electric
fire alarm system, which would
quickly notify the people ns to the
exact location, and that, too, when
the blaze is in its iucipjeuoy, thus
giving the companies good time to
get to the place. Then the reel
houses could be better arranged,
aud things fixed so as to give the
firemen less work. The electric
system can he put in at compara
tively litjle expense, aud property
may he saved by it.
T|)e citizens are a unit in wantlDg
something don", and the city fath
ers are respectfully requested to
give the malter their attention..
