The Newlca Factory Nearing Comple
tion— And the Old Being Thoroughly
Overhauled—We Will Have Plenty of
Ice.
AmericuB didn’t have near
enough ice last summer.
And during gome of the hottest
days, our perspiring citizens could
not obtain a pound of the then joy
giviugand comfort bringing article.
However, Americus was not
alone in her discomfort, as not only
did all Georgia cities go through
the same trying ordeal, hut cities
ail over the country had the same
experience.
Statistics show that the consump
tion of ice has increased in liig
jumps from year to year, and last
summer the amo.'nt used was
enormously in excess of that of
auy other year.
The Americus Ice Factory was
the sole meaus of supplyiug the
city, and although possessing a
capacity of twenty tons daily, could
not keep half the citizens in tlie
article.
Tlie great trouble was with the
machiue, which, though a good
oue, was not managed properly.
Not wishing to past through an
other summerjwithotit enough ice
lo keep everybody cool, a number
of our citizens recently got together
and organized tlie Americus Re
frigerating Company. Tlie amount
of stock necessary was subscribed
with no trouble, and work was at
once begun to be in readiness to
furnish ice by the beginning of
summer.
The buildingjis now nearly com
pleted, and is located down by the
variety,works.
Mr.[G. H. ,Holgate is now here to
superintend the potting in of the
machinery, and says the factory
willjbe in active operation within a
mouth. It will have a capacity of
twenty tons daily
The old factory too, is being
worked and will have a full capac
ity of twenty tone daily. Mr. G.
I). Hare, representing the Consoli
dated Ice Machine Company, ar
Bringing in Money.
The Sumter Beal Estate Com
pany brought something like $10,000
Into Americus the flrst of this
month. It will be remembered that
a number of lots at Brooklyn
Heights were sold by the company
last September. The terms were
half cash, one-fourtb In six months,
and the remainder in twelve.
The second payment was due tlie
llrst of March, and tho money
came lu on time. One fourth of
the total amount is about $10,000,
brought here through the instru
mentality of this company.
Tire company is in a flourishing
condition, and continues to make
profit for the members and help lu
building up our city.
Mr. D. F Davenport is president,
and Mr. C. C. Hawkins, secretary
and treasurer.

machinery. This
is tho guarantee
made a test, and
made was not r aelied, Mr. Hare
after working on it for Rwhile,
with the ten ton
tank, made thirteen and a half
tons in twenty-four hours.
The machine In now in perfect
running order, and Mr. W. C. Gray,
the Secrotary, spys they will surely
turn out twenty#tons daily.
This will give Americus SO,000
pounds of ice every day.
Or eight poupds to every man,
woman and child.
That certainly will be enough,
even counting for a large amount
to be shipped oft. We will have
four times as much as last summer,
and for a half » cent a pound you
will he able i> purchase all you
