Washington-, May 22.—[Special.]—
The Yew York Herald has a startling
story this morning in reference to Mr.
Blain’s health.
The story originated in the Herald's
Washington benreati, and was >ont to
Yew York several days ago but only ap
peared to-day.
The information is that Mr. Blaine’s
mind is atTected, and that he is no long
er capable of undergoing the mental
strain his official position imposes.
The Herald asserts that Mr. Maine’s
physical condition has been persistently
concealed, that the plain truth is that he
is a confirmed invalid, and that Harrison
is fully aware that he cannot much
longer remain iu his cabinet.
In the department of state, it is as
serted that business has been so shaped
for the pase thirteen months as to ac
commodate itself to the frailty of Mr.
Blaine's health. Among the diplomatic
corps the same consideration for the in
valid statesman has been obtained.
The heads of legation have had cause
to criticize the conduct of Mr. Blaine in
refusing to speed their affairs, but their
criticisms have always been coupled
with sympathetic expressions foi the
sick cabinet officer.
This story, published in so reputable
a paper as the Herald, and written, as
it evidently Is, with great care, has
caused a sensation in this city.
The probability that it will bo denied
by Mr Blaine’s friends has not been
overlooked, and the evidence submitted
in support of what is published is un
mistakable and strong.
The Herald says: “In this era of su
preme trial for Mr. Blaine and those
near and de.ar to him, the public will be
glad to learn that the white house re
flected the best feelings of our people
in a matter of such misfortune.

Louisville, May 22.—One of the
most fiendish crimes ever known in
Kentucky is reported from Sandy Hook,
the county seat of Elliott.
A young school teacher, Miss Maud
Fleenor, was thrown from her horse
which had been frightened by. the two
Wilcox brothers, each of whom the girl
had refused to marry.
With one leg and an arm broken, she
was chained in a deserted cabin, where
she was kept a prisoner since the mid
dle of April, and slowly dying, was made
the victim of her captors’ lust.
Last Tuesday a posse, headed by her
brother, found the girl, who died fiftoen
minutes later. The Wilcox brothers
were captured, confessed and were
promptly shot to death.

was shot through the body twice, and
would die. One of the Stanleys had a

death is expected every minute. One of
the Shelton brothers received two razor
cuts, each of them deemed fatal.
Yews of the fight reached here to-day.
Yo arrests have yet been made, though
the officers are in pursuit of those who
were aide to flee.
