Atlanta, July 24.—Charles M. Oz-
burn paid the penalty of his crime with
his life to-day.
The drop fell at 12:118. The cruel
murder of John M. Bradley has been
avenged, and justice still has an abiding
.place in Georgia.
Governor Northen this morning de
cided that he could not interfere with
the sentence of the court.

Washington, D. C., July 23.—There
doesn’t seem to be any further doubt on
the minds of the people here that For-
akcr is after John Sherman’s senatorial
toga, and that he will give that astute
old legislator and politician a vast deal
of worry between this and next No
vember.
What effect this struggle will have
upon the gubernatorial race is a matter
of speculation. Mr. McKinley is a timid
candidate and it is reported |here to-day
that he is trembling in his shoes for fear
he will be sacrificed in the light to elect
members of the legislature.
The situation is very awkward, to say
the least of it, and the Ohio republican
office-holders here have been unusually
active for some cause, and for some days
past.
The statement is made that Sherman
cannot possibly be re-elected by reason
of the known hostility of the farmers
alliance to his financial theories and
that, recognizing this, he is in the race
simply to aid “Calico Charley’’ Foster,
whom he prefers to see succeed him
rather than any other man.
This statement seems to have good
foundation, for the reason that Foraker

usual, drinking many toddies. When
told that his time was almost ended, lie
said: “I don't give a damn.”
Only a fow people were allowed to seo
him in his cell.this morning. Sergeant
Bob Ozburn of the police forco was
among the number, as were Ur. O. H.
Stricklor and Rev. Walker Lewis, who
were with him some time. These men
of God received by litt'o encouragement
from Ozburn. When Mr. Lewis asked
him if ho wished him to pray ho said he
didn't care if ho did or didn't.
Mrs. Ozburn paid her doomed hus
band a last visit this morning. Site loft
him at 10:05 o'clock. Slio was heavily
veiled but her red oyos could bo seen
seen through the veil. Mrs. Ozburn re
mained with her husband for quito
a wbilo, but ho did not seem to recog
nize her. Whon she told him lie had to
dio ho said:
"I know it. I don’t caro.”
At 11:25 o'clock Ozburn called fora
toddy, which was given him. At 11:45
the gallows suit was placed on the con
demned man. A short whilo afterward
the march to the gallows was taken up.
Just before that was done Drs.
gtricklcr and Barnett offered up tlio last
prayer for Ozburn in his coll. The
murdoror placed his hands over Ids face
whilo tlio prayers wore being said, and
then told thorn lie would try to do what
thoy said for him to do. Just aftor tlio
prayer a stiff toddy, tlio last lie drank on
earth, was given Ozburn.
The death warrant was then read and
Ozburn was marched to tho gallowa.
Supportod by liis cousin, Sergeant Oz
burn and Jailor Faith lio walked out of
tbo cell smoking a cigarotto. At
ho ascondcd tlio gallows. Ho was
dressed in a light suit of clothes and
woro a derby hat. He seemed much
improved in appcaranco and stronger
than in somo time.
Ozburn did not seem to renlizo what
is going on, hut stood with bowed
head, holding his derby lint in one hand,
whilo witli tlio otlior ho picked nt the
short stubby beard upon his faco.
Evoryono was withdrawn from tlio
gallows but four men—Ozburn, Jailer
Faith, Jailer Miller and Shcrlf Mor
row.
Tho two jailors stood on eitlior side of
Ozburn on tho narrow shelf between the
trap and tho railing around tlio gal
lows.
With one hand each held to tho rail
ing whilo with tho ottior lie clutched
Ozburn by his arm, while ho swayed a
little back and forth, for the supporters
were in a strained position,
Tbo three ropes attached to tho trig
gers two dead and one “alive,” wero
stretched through the windows as they
wero in Washington’s hanging.
Tlicro was a momentary buzz of con
versation, but it was hushed like magic
when the word "ono” rung out from
Sheriff Morrow.
Every eye was fixed upon the frail
body standing on tho gallows, when the
word “two” sounded out like the voice
of doom itself.
"Thieo,” called the sheriff, and then
with a tightening of the trigger strings
and a rattling of the traps he fell down
ward to his death, a little moan escap
ing from IiIb lips, as his neck was broken
by the fall.
The hanging was altogether private,
no one being admitted who didn't have
a ticket Only about forty peoplo saw
tbo hanging. The sheriff saw that there
were no Kodaks inside the enclosure.
The street in front of the jail was
crowdod since a very early hour. A
squad of policemen kept tramping up
and down the sidewalk keeping the peo
ple out of the way.
Men, women and children, the women
being colored, stood for hours or sat
upon the curbstone waiting patiently,
and yet all they could hope to see was
the covered wagon as It passed out with
the lifeless body of ihe murderer.

Sr. Paul, Minn., July 2:1.—St. Paul
has been made the headquarters of the
natioual government of the United
Farmers' Alliances of tlio country, to
corner tlio entire wheat crop of tho
United States.
A circular reciting tho benefits of the
combination, and urging the formation
of the “trust” has been made public.
The circular estimates the wheat crop
of ldOl in the United States at 500,000,-
000 bushels. The promoters of the trust
believe that four-fifths of this wheat can
be held back by tlio farmers for from
four to eight weeks and high prices
secured.

Hk.niikrson, Tex., July 23.—A negro
rapist namod William Johnson, aged
17 years, was taken out of the county
jail, this morning, by an armed mob,
who overpowered tho jailer.
Getting possession of the keys and se
curing tho negro, they took him to a
treo near the public square and swung
him into oternlty.
No excitement prevailed.
Another negro charged with a similar
criuio was jailed just a few hours previ
ous to the lynching. Had h's prcscnco
been known, lie would have sliarod the
fato of Johnson.

meeting of the state alliance, now in ses
sion here, and visitors, alliancemcn and
others, attracted by the debate announc
ed to take placo botween Governor Ben
Tillman and Lecturer Bon Terrell on the
sub-treasury.
It lias been decided that tho debato
will tako placo to-morrow morning, and
that it will be secret.
Tlicro is great disappointment on the
part of tho nou-alliauco public, who had
hoped to hoar the discussion net'.veon

northern part of tlio city, made a mur
derous assault on his wife with a chop
axe. Ho dealt her sovcral blows on the
head with the axe, making deep cuts
and also crushing her skull. Another
blow split open tho fleshy part of -her
arm. Tlio police captured Gaines while
lie was removing liis bloody clothing. Ifc

Washington, July 24.—The Harrison
crowd was badly stampeded by the pub
lication in this correspondence last week
of the fact that tlio Blaineites had, in the
slang of the day, “got on to” their
scheme of making Mr. Blaine too ill, in'
the newspapers, to think of being a can
didate next year, and denials have been
the order of the day ever since; but the
Blaine fellows are by no means satis
fied with denials, because they have in
their possession a number of republican
papers which printed Washington spe
cials, supposing them to be sent out by
“Lige” Halford's protege, and therefore
to bo not only true, but to he strictly in
accordance with the sentiment of the
administration, or rather its head, and
they refuse to believe that it is a mere
coincidence that these papers are all
anti-Blaine shoots. They don't think
tlio excuse that “Lige's” protege was
out of town, and that these anti-Blaine
specials were sent by a substitute, is a
satisfactory one.
Tho oddest part of this "Comedy of
Errors” is that tlieso superserviceabic
Harrison men have offended the mau
they were trying to help, and that they
have been sharply lectured, by proxy, by
Mr. Harrison, who, howover much lie
may fear Blaine, doesn't approvo of this
method of disposing of him. The whole
alTair is furnishing no end of amusement
for democrats.
It is now stated at the State depart
ment that the arbitrators in the Behring
Sea controversy will shortly be ap
pointed, an agreement having been
readied betwocn the department
and Sir Julian Pauncefote, the British
Minister, and the papers sent to Mr.
Harrison.
A gentleman from Texas, who, al
though prominent in that state, is so
modest that lie doesn’t wish his name
mentioned, lias, by a few words, more
or less carelessly spoken, given those in
terested in tho spoakersilip contest
something to think about. Ho said:
Tlicro is considerable pressure being
brought to boar upon Governor Hogg to
persuade him to call an extra session of
tlio legislature. He lias given no Inti
mation of his intentions, but if lie calls
tho extra session, ono of its duties will
be to o'cct a United States senator, and
I rattier think that Representative Mills
would bo elected, although a combina
tion of tho other aspirants (among whom
are tlio governor and Mr. Chilton, who
was so promptly named by the governor
as successor to Sonator Rcnator) might
result in liis defeat.
If tlio legislature should meet in extra
session any timo beforo next December,
it is certain that somo very strong dem
ocratic influence from outsido of that
state would be brought to bear to get
Mr. Mills elected sonator because that
would rcniovo him from tlio speakership
contest, and a number of other gentle
men arc ready and willing to go into a
good-natured catch-as-catch-can scram
ble for tho votes that have been pledged
to Mr. Mills for speaker, which would
bo released by ids election totlio senato."
Representative Oates, of Alabama,
who is hero on business, loses no oppor
tunity to warn tho southern democracy
of tlio danger which he thinks menaces
(tin the farmors' alliance, lfo said:
“Thcro are certain men who have
joined hands witli tho allianco simply
with a desire to advance their personal
interests, and pull down every man who
lias gained any political prominence.
Unless tho democrats of the south come
tojsomo understanding and determine
to live up to tho principles of tlio demo
cratic party, tlio alliance, in its efforts
to dominate that soction. may capture
Alabama, Georgia aud the two Caro-
llnas.”
It caused little surpriso hero to learn
that Secretary Foster will become a can
didate for the senate, in ease the repub
licans elect tho legislature in Ohio this
year, as it lias been known for some timo
that tho administration influence would
bo thrown against Foraker.
The Spanish minister hurriedly re
turned to Washington this week from
Cape May, where his family are now-
staying, and tlicro is an unverified rumor
that tlicro is a hitch somewhere regard
ing the reciprocity agreement with
Spain, which for some reason Mr, Har
rison lias never yet made public. The
usual mysterious silence Is preserved at
tho department, and the minister will
say nothing further than that he was
called to Washington on important busi
ness.
It is extremely difficult just now to
find a cabinet officer in Washington; they
flit in one day and out the next, and are
more intent upon having a good time
than in attending to the business of the
government.
Under the reorganization of the post-
oflico department, just completed, the
first assistant postmaster general will at
tend to many things that have been
looked after by Mr. Wanamaker, and
that gentleman will have more time to
look after his private business, in order
that he may be in a position to make a
large campaign contribution next year.
