Mr». Sarah Walter., living about three
mile, west of Amerlcu., was awakened
about 12 o’clock Friday night by the
falling of a heavy body. At once divin
ing the true state of affair., Ur.. Wal
ter. arose and called Mr. T. W. Fuller,
who occupies a room in the rear of the
bouse. When Mr. Fuller arrived he
found that the burglars had made their
escape by jumping through the opon
window of the dining room. After an
examination l|)rs. Walters discovered
that the thieves had arranged to carry
off two trunks, but in their haste were
only able to secure one of the trunks and
a small satchel. The stolen trunk be
longed to Miss Walters, and contained
clothing to the value of $75 to $100,
while in the satchel was a small amount
of money.
A search revealed the fact that the
trunk was opened, rilled of Its contents,
and then probably hidden in the woods,
as many small articles identified by
Miss Walters as having been In it were
found on the road to Americas.
To make sure when all was safe to
conSroenco operations the burglars pull
ed a heavy yard bench under Mr. Ful
ler’s window, thus commanding a view
of the Interior of bis room and enabling
them to ascertain when he was safely
asleep.
There was quite a collation left upon
the dining room table from the previous
meal, and this the thieves devoured
completely.
Tracks in the yard and around the
houso load to the supposition that the
theft was committed by a man and
woman.
As yet no capture has been effected.

The Suece.. Which Ha. Attended the Un
tiring Effort, of Mr. Thomas Guico.
Eight years ago Tom Guice, the pro
prietor of the Opera House Saloon,
under the opera house, Forsyth street,
came to Americus a penniless boy, but
by strict attention to business, coupled
with perseverance and economy, has at
tained an enviable reputation as a busi
ness man.
Three years ago be opened business
at his present stand, with Mr. Ed Speer
as a partner, with only three hundred
dollars. Everything seemed to prosper,
and within twelve months be bought
out Mr. Speer, paying $2,000 cash, and
for the past two yoars he has been
going it alone. He now has one of the
handsomest bars in southwest Georgia,
the fixtures costing between $1,200 and
$1,500. He cariies a stock valued at
$5,000, consisting of wines, whiskies,
cigars and tobacco; also an immense line
of loaded and unloaded shells, loading
Implements aud material, powder and
shot, for all of which he pays the cash.
He is agent for the famous “Eagle”
brand whisky, for which ho has built
up a very great domand in .this section.
And, in fact, he has the reputation of
keeping the best of everything in bis
line, and talking about cold beer, bo
keeps it on hand fresh and fine all the
time, and sells more of it than any
other house iu Americus. His opora
house sol >on is run by himself, assisted
by Mr. Joo Jolly, who has a “smile” to
suit everybody. He is also book-keeper
for this bouse aud Mr. Guice’s Cotton
avenue saloon.
In speaking of the Cotton Avenue sa
loon, it may bo remomberod by way of
parenthesis, that this is one of the neat
est and prettiest bars in Americus, with
Walter Harris as manager, and Eugene
Harris clerk, in which is carried a sev
eral thousand dollar stock. Mr. Harris
has the reputation of being one of the
best mixers of fancy drinks In the State,
and bis brother Eugeno, Is not far be
hind him.
Mr. Guico, though quite a young man,
is far onough ahead to own bank and
other stocks, and has a good balanco in
tho bank, besides having purchased a
nice ten room two-story residence for his
mother.
Mr. Guice owns one of the fastest un
trained horses in the state that ho would
not part with for a good pile of money.
Everybody likes Tom Guice, and his
popularity, joinod to his careful atten
tion to bis business will surely bring
about a very successful career.
