Sumter County to Build n Jail Second to
Few In the State—Architect Norrnian's
Finn. Accepted—There Wee Much Com
petition In the Bidding.
The board of county commissioners
yesterday closed the contract for the
new jail, with cells and fixtures com
plete, for the sum of »V2,600. The con
tract was awarded to the Pauley Jail Bull-
din g<& Manufacturing Co. of St Louis,
Mo., and specifies the entire construction
and completion of the edifice according
to the plans prepared by Mr. G. L. Norr-
raann, the eminent Atlanta architect,
who superintends the erection.
The successful* bidders received the
award of contract over nine other com
petitors, and they bear a national repu
tation as a firm of integrity and fair
dealing.
The fact that N’orrman is the architect
insures to the county a jail complete in
every respect, and the fact is greatly to
the credit of those in authority that
every precaution for the health of the
prisoners lias been taken in the way of
sanitary plumbing and ventilation, and
when completed, if such an institution
can be a source of pride, Sumter county’s
new jail will be, as is the court house, a
credit to her people.
It will bo-erected back of the space
between the city hall and county court
house,
Tlio board of county commissioners
erected for onr people a court house
wnich is a pride to the state, and the
new jail will be entirely in keeping with
the ornate and substantial stylo of archi
tecture heretofore displayed in our pub
lic buildings.
WHISKEY
is often u9cd as medicine, iu which case
the purity of the article is of the great
est importance. I. W. Harper is a Ken
tucky distiller of national reputation.
The product of his distillery is shipped
direct to the retail trade; it passes
through no middleman's hands to ho
mixed, colored and watered. Consum
ers therefore have the assurance that I.

lute purity by his agents.

Two Deaths.
Deputy Sheriff John Lamar went out
to DeSoto yesterday morning with a
burial case for the remains of Mr. T. H
Scrutchin, a prominent planter of Leo
county, who died on Friday night, after
short illness. Mr. Scrutcliin was a
highly esteemed citizen, and many
friends mourn his death.
Mr. Kaufman, a Hebrew who had been
traveling through this and other coun
ties peddling his wares, died at his
boarding house on Lee street Thursday
night, after a fow days illness. Tho
body was taken in charge by Hawkins A
Loving and the friends of the dead man,
who escorted the remains to the South
western depot. Tho body was sont by

Retailors and Jobbers of
All that composed the old court house
of Sumter county that lias stood for
many years in tho center of the public
square, linn at last lieen torn away, and
nothing now remains but the rubbish
thereof.
Shortly after the sketch written by
Judge Piisbury was published in Tue
Times-Recobbeb, an old gentleman ar
rived In the city, and at once proceeded
to the site where the building had
stood.
For several momenta he stood silent
and meditative, at length he apoke to a
citizen, who was standing near by,
follows;
“Tliirty-flvo years sgo, I was a citizen
of this county, and a well-to-do farmer,
living In the now Fifteenth district,
loved and married one of my neighbor's
daughters, and fora shor time life was
worth living; I was supremely happy,
and thanked our heavenly Father for the
many blessings that he bestowed upon
me and mine.”
Here the old mau pullod his handker
chief from his pocket and wiped away
the tears that came trickling down Ilfs
cheeks.
Soon my happiness came to an end,
and an unprincipled scoundrel came be
tween my love and me. Weeks passed
after this came to my knowledge, before
I spoke to my wife of my intentions,
which were to sue for a divorce and
leave the country. Court was in session.
I came to Americus and employed Ad.
Brown, who duly filed my complaint.
But tlie court could not see things as I
did, and would not grant me a divorce.
I left the court house, vowing that I
would never marry until the courthouse
was either burned down or torn away.
That vow I have kept; though It was
hard to do. 1 left my wife, plantation
and all, wandered over tho west; fought
through the war and courted death.
Af’er tlie war was oves I settled In Ter
rell county and have lived there ever
since.
At this time the old man's face bright
ened up, and a smile took the place of
tears as the citizen asks him what he was
going to do. Said he: “I have kept my
vow, and as the old house lias been torn
away, I will bo married next Sunday
afternoon. I came here to see if It was
really gone. Yes, sir, I will marry next
Sunday afternoon."
We want every mother to know that
croup can be prevented. True croup
never appears without a warning. The
first symptom is hoarseness; then tho
child appears to havo taken cold ora
cold may have accompanied tho hoarse
ness from the start, After that a pocu
liar rough cough is doveioped, which is
followed by the croup. The time to act
is when the child first becomes hoarse; a
few doses of Chamberlain’s Cough Rem
edy will prevent the attack. Even after
a rough cough has appeared, the disease
maybe prevented by using this remedy
as directed. For sale by W. C. Russell.
“Your son has been graduated?”

’T IS VERY STRANGE
That people will suffer from pimples and blotches when they might speedily remove these
disfigurements by the use o, Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. It cleanses the blood of Impurities.
“My face, for years, was covered with
pimples and humors, for which I could Hod
no remedy till I began to take Ayer's Sarsa
parilla. Three bottles of this great blood
medicine effected a thorough cure, and I
confidently recommend It to all suffering
from similar troubles.”—Madison Parker,
Concord, Vt.
When I was eighteen years old I was
troubled with a bad humor. Being advised
to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, I took four hot*
ties, which caused the eruptions to dry np
and scale off, leaving my body, arms, and
tegs In a clean, healthy condition. I haw
not had any symptoms of the compiaH
since.”—W. B. Allru, Dennysville, Me.
