COL. HAWKINS MAKES NO OVER
TURES TO THE R. & D.
Savannah Clamoring for an Kxteuiiou of
the Hoad—The Human* that the Louis*
ville and Nashville System Will Take a
Hand Intha Game Generally Credited.
There is a robust sentimeut abroad
favoring the assumption that the nego
tiations that were pending betweeu the
L. Sc X. and the S. A. Sc M. are complete
and that the eastern division of this
road will be built shortly.
Savannah is clamoring for the exten
sion, signifying her readiness to lend a
helping hand as soon as circumstances
shape themselves toward a completion
of the road to Savannah.
These strong reasons why a deal has
been ell'ected between the L & X. and
the S. A. Sc M roads present themselves
clearly and forcibly:
First: The deep water agitation in Sa
vannah has attracted the attention of
tlie great Louisville Sc Nashville system,
and they desire an Atlantic port outlet.
Second: During the month it was cur
rent report in the newspapeis that the
Louisville Sc Nashville had secured con
trol of the South Carolina railroad and
would seek a port at Charleston. The
Louisville Sc Nashville, jointly with the
Georgia Central, own, by lease, the
Georgia railroad, from Augusta to At
lanta. The Louisville Sc Nashville also
own, by lease, the Western Sc Atlantic,
from Atlanta to Chattanooga, and there
the Louisville & Nashville has plenty of
connections.
Had they secured the South Carolina
road of course they would have easy ac
cess to Charleston. This scheme, how
ever, if it were ever seriously thought of,
has fallen through, and now It seems
that the Louisville Sc Nashville may
come to Sa van unit by way of the Savan
nah, Americus & Montgomery.
Third: That it will offer the shortest
route to Birmingham, St. Louis, Cincin
nati, Mobil**, Pensacola and New Or
leans.
Au interview with a promi lent citizen
in Savannah in the Press throws no little
light on the complexion of sentiment in
Savannah regarding the completion of
the eastern division of the Sam road:
“You fellows of the Press had it down
about right about the Savannah, Amer
icus Ar Montgomery and the Louisville Sc
Nashville yesterday,” said a prominent
railroader this afternoon.
“Do you know,” ho continued, “that
I beliove that Colonel Hawkins is ar
ranging witli the Louisville Sc Nashville.
“The very f.4ct that Colonel Hawkins,
since his row with the Richmond and
Danville, has made no overtures to that
line is proof positive that he has other
resources.
“Of course the Savanuah, Americus Sc
Montgomery can’t remain in the state it
now is. That wouldn’t be business—
apd, I tell you, Hawkins is a business
man. I am convinced in my own mind
that if he isn’t trading witli the Louis
ville and Nashville, that ho lias some
other thing in view—possibly as good.
“I feci it ail through me that Savan
nah is goiug to he beueiited by this dis
agreement between Colonel Hawkins
and the Richmond Sc Danville. I am in
a position to know, because of ray asso
ciation witli the liiisiuesM men of Savan
nah, that they are ripe for any move
ment that will aid the building of the
Savannah, Americus Sc Montgomery into
the city, if any reasonable assurance is
given that it will not be absorbed by its
competitors after it has been built into
thocP.y. You people of the Press are
on the right line as regards this railroad
matter. Keep it up.
“Agitation is the thing now. The
newspapers can do more than any other
agency in encouraging Colonel Hawkins
