Like stubble in the flames.
Ely Black meets a horrible death!
The old man dashes himself against
the window in futile attempts to escape.
News reached Americus yesterday of
tho frightful death of an old negro man
man named Ely Black, which occurred
about seven miles from Americus.
It seems that the old man was left
alone in his bed in the morning, while
Ills two daughters went to the field to
work.
When they first discovered the fire
the roof was falling iD and the tongues
of flame had almost enwrapped the
house.
They dashed to the window at the bed
of the old man, who was in his nintioth
year and unable to walk, and raising it
attempted to rescue him from the seeth
ing flames that were gradually creeping
upon him, hut every lime they at
tempted to puli him through the win
dow ho would fall back, iiis frame being
too large to squeeze through.
In a few minutes his screams told
them that the flames had reached their
victim, and before any practical aid
could be rendered him the flames had
reduced his body to a charred mass of
undistinguishable bone and flesh.
It was a horrible spectacle; that win
live in the memory of those who wit
nessed it ss long as life lasts.
The origin of the fire was evidently
accidental and must have first started
in the room that the old negro occu
pied.

A new form of horseshoes has been
patented which can bo quickly and se
curely placed on a horse’s hoof and as
quickly removed, no nails being re
quired.
The shoe is made in two hinged parts,
each Bimilar in shape to one-half of the
common shoe. Thin metallic shields at
tached to the shoe cover part of the hoof,
and meet in front in the interlocking
knuckles, through which a pin is thrust
to form the hinge.
Around the upper edge of the shields
are bands doubled inward at the rear to
the project behind the heel of a horse
and terminating in flanges which receive
a clamping holt for fastening the shoe

The laws of health are taught In the
schools; but not in a way to ue of much
practicable benefit, and are never illus
trated by living examples, which in
many cases might easily be done. If
soma scholar, who had just contracted a
cold, was brought before the school, so
that all could hear the dry, loud cough
and know its significance; sec the thin
white coating on the tongue, and later,
as the cold developed, see the profuse
watery expectoration and thin watery
discharge from the nose, not one of them
would ever forget what tho first symp
toms of a cold were. The scholar should
then be given Chamberlalu’s Cough
Remedy freely, that all might sec that
even a severe cold could be cured in one
or two days, or at least greatly miti
gated, when properly treated as soon as
the first symptoms appear. This remedy
is famous for it’s cures of coughs, colds
and croup. It is made especially for
these diseases and ia the most prompt
and most reliable medicine known for
the purpose. 60 cent bottles for sale by
