CARPETS! REGS! MATTINGS!
Some Beautiful New Styles Just Added to
th s Large Stock on Hand.
You have heard a great deal about the advance on Carpets in
consequence of the McKinley bill, and the half has hardly been told ;
but my opposition to a protective tariff leads me to do all that I can to
lessen the burdens it imposes, and I am determined to sell von
Carpets AS LOW AS YOU EVER- BOUGHT THEM, REGARD
LESS OF THE TARIFF,
To enable me to do this I sell for CASH, and at MUCH
SHORTER PROFITS than I could do on a CREDIT. I will take
great pleasure in showing my Carpets to everybody.
J. J. GRANBERRY, AG-T.
On Sunday the congregation asscra
bled at the negro Methodist church were
shocked beyond expression by a fearful
coincidence coupled with a sudden
death.
Old man Lewis Tooke is a member of
the choir, and lias always been a promi
nent figure in the circles of the colored
Methodist church, regularly paying his
devotion at the churc'i -? his adoption,
and pouring out his s od in psalms and
long meter tunus
As was usual on Sunday afternoon at
four o'clock the old man was at his post
in the choir, although in feeble health.
He evidently bad a presentiment that
bis cup of life|had been drained almost
to the dregs, since the Saturday preced
ing be had paid his landlady his rent,
remarking, when she hesitated to re
ceive it, that he desired she should take
it, since he was afraid ho didn’t have
long to live.
The old man'B troubled presentiments
were too truly realized.
After a few preliminary remarks by
the pastor in charge, old Lewis raised
the familiar tune “Am I born to die.”
It was his last tune on eartK. He was
seen to stagger, gasp and fall prostrate,
and almost before the congregation real
ized the awful scene, death had set its
seal on his lips and the refrain had died
into an echo.
Tlie occurrence scattered consterna
tion in tiie church, and the congregation
decided to be dismissed.
Tlie old negro died of heart disease,
having been in feeble health for some
time.
The coincidence was appalling one to
say the least and made a profound im
pression on those witnessing the scene.
Lewis was wis a good negro about
•ixty-five years old, with convivial hab
its, however, and for fifteen years was in
the employ of Mr. U. B. Harrold, until
recently, when he was employed in the
warehouse of Mr. Lee Council.

Tho laws of health are taught in the
schools; hut not in a way to no of much
practicable benefit, and aro never illus
trated by living examples, which in
many cases might easily be done. If
some scholar, who had just contracted a
cold, was brought before the school, so
that all could hear the dry, loud cough
and know its significance; see the thin
white coating on the tongue, and later,
as the cold developed, see the profuse
watery expectoration and thin watery
discharge from the nose, not one of them
would ever forget what the first symp
toms of a cold were. The scholar should
then be given Chamberlain’s Cough
Kemedy freely, that all might see that
even a severe cold conld he cured In one
or two days, or at least greatly miti
gated, when properly treated as soon as
the first symptoms appear. This remedy
is famous for it’s cures of coughs, colds
and croup. It is made especially for
these diseases and is the most prompt
and most reliable medicine known for
the purpose. 50 cent bottles for sale by
