BLAINE RESIGNS
HIS POSITION AS SECRETARY OF
STATE.
A firm! Tolitiral Sensation at Washington
— Tile Secretary Sends III. Resignation to
Ifairl.on ami It ]• Immediately Accepted
Itlalne a Candidate For tile Nomination.
Washington', June 4.—[Special.]—
The city is seething with excitement.
The greatest political sensation of the
year has|beenjsprung.
James G. Blaine has just resigned as
secretary of state.
And President Harrison has accepted
the resignation.
The resignation came like a thunder
clap,|[ and everybody knows what it
means.
: t e popular ex-nominee of the repub
lican party will not only accept the
nomination if tendered him, but may
now be considered a candidate.
Nobody doubts that he is in the race,
and it looks as if he will get the nomi
nation.
Here is tire correspondence between
him and the president:
“To the President:—X respectfully beg
leave to submit my resignation of the
office of secretary of state of the United
States, to which I was appointed by you
od the 5th of March 1880. The condi
tion of public business in the depart-
men of state justifies me in requesting
that my resignation may bo accepted ira
mediately.
I have the honor to be very respect
fully, your obedient servant,
“James G. Blaine.
“To the Secretary of State:—Your
letter of this date tendering your resig
nation of the office of secretary of state
of the United States has been received.
Tile terms in which you state your
desires are such as to leave me no choice
but to accede to your wishes at once.
Your resignation is therefore accepted.
Very respectfully yours,
“Beni, JIahhison,
‘To Hon. James G. Blaine."

Cough Remedy in my family and have
no hesitation in saying it is an excellent
remedy. I believe all that is claimed
for it. Persons afflicted by a cough or

danger from whooping cough when this
remedy is freely given. 25 and 50 cent

It seems the owners of Dr. Drum
mond’s Lightning Remedy for rheuma
tism have a bonanza, as their remedy
has never been known to fail in a single
case. There is certainly room in the
market for a medicine that would do
what they claim for this wonderful
preparation. Although the price is *5
per bottle, if it does one-half claimed
for it the price should be 1100. If the
druggist has not got it, tbe remedy will
be sent to any address by prepaid ex-

Monthly Meeting Largely Attended.
The Barbecue.
A detachment of the Americus Bar
becue club attended the monthly 'cue of
Harmony Alliance yesterday, at Gate
wood’s school house, about three miles
from town.
The detachment arrived safely, and
was well cared for by the Alliancemcn
until dinner was announced.
Such a dinner.
And tbe detachment fought nobly.
Uncle Alf Bell over Jiere, Cousin Joe
’ Roney over there. Uncle Seph Buchanan
and Coot Stanfield in the window,
Messrs. Sullivan and Argue to their left
and Editor-President Gatewood attend
ing to their wants—and he had his hands
full. It would have done your heart
good to see the “town folks” eat, and
the Alliancemen and their wives and
daughters waiting on them. The cue
was the “finest ever placed on a table.”
Done to a turn.
The dinner was not composed of bar
becue alone. Other edibles, such as
chicken, ham, turkey, baked pig, salads
of all kinds, cakes, custards, pies, pre
serves and everthing else you could wish
for.
This was not a “set” dinner, but mere
ly the monthly meeting of Harmony
Alliance, that is called a neighborhood
gathering, and how happy, congenial
a id contented ail seem to be. Every
body joined in and succeeded in making
it pleasant and sociable for his neighbor.
. The detachment have been members
of the Americus cue club for a long
time, which club allows no lady mem
bers at all, but they now see the error of
their way. They want tbe women folks
hereafter, and expect to introduce a res
olution at'tlieir next meeting admitting
them.
Cousin Aney Gatewood has been presi
dent of the Harmony Alliance for four
years[and has filled the office with per
feet satisfaction to the members, who
propose electing him by a rising vote
next month. Cousin Aney is a rustler,
and a barbecue man right.
A heavy rain fell just after dinner,
oue of the heaviest that has visited that
portion’of the county in.years. It was a
log floater. No serious damage was
done to the crops, however. The rain
was a welcome visitor. Dinner and the
rain being over, everybody left for home
happy and contented, and felt that it
was good to have been there.
Farmer John Walker will furnish the
next pig for this club. He says it will
be a thoroughbred Jersey.
