Tbosejexcursluns that ran Into Ameri
ca. Tuesday attracted much Intemt in
Colnmbu*.
According to the Colnmbu. Enquirer-
Sun the Sam caught the crowd with a
bras. band.
Here’s the account published in that
paper:
The Union depot was the scene of
wild excitement yesterday, and appa
rently the entire colored population of
Columbus was collected there to witness
th* departure t f the two excursion trains
fur Americus.
The railroad men have been deeply In-
terrstedjfor several day* past In the re
sult of the excursion , because both the
Columbus (Southern and the Central
railroad* were striving to obtain the
largest number of excursionists, and
several enthusiastic yonng men bet their
Icinge on their respective roads.
. .. 1 lea of an excursion to Americus

of the Columbus’Southern. He adver
tised a rate of|*l for the round trip, and
Incontinently the Central advertised an
excursion onjtbe same day to tbs same
place at|a rate of SO cents for the round
trip. Naturally Col. Gabbett was
obliged to|reduce bis rate and for a time
there was a report that the Central would
carry passengers for nothing and give
them all the water they wanted beside*.
The authorities In Savannah, however,
objected tnjearrying the rivalry to such
an extent and finally the 30-cent rate
was adoptedlbyjbolh reads.
Early yesterday morning a Central
train of five cars backed into tho depot
and for a time It looked as though they
would do a blg^buslnesa. A few min
utes later, 1} however, the Columbus
Southern train of seven cars appeared
on the Georgia-Midland track. It was
Immediately apparent that the Col. Gab
bett bad out generated hie competitors
and would receive the bulk of tbe
crowd.
The cars of Col. Gabbett’s train were
bedecked with gay bunting, and placards
announced that (lemonade nnd Ice water
ware provided for tbe thirsty. A brass
band was also In attendance, and tested
In one of tbe coaches they tilled tbe air
with martial strain*. Before the tint
bar bad been played to the end the
crowd was captured, and the Central
officials were obliged to stand by and
sue their passengers Dock over to the op
position like sheep. Anil wlieu the
train left tho Columbus Sort hern carried

TI10 distance to Amurlcua over the

the Columbus Southern, and Col. Gab-
butt was extremely anxious to Intro his
train reach Americus first; owing, how-

Sam road and the Columbus Southern,
tbe Central traiu reached Its destination
eight minutes before its rival.

Atlanta, Jane 7.—[Special.]—The
state prohibition convention Is in seaalon
in Atlanta to-day.
Although nothing of importance de
veloped during the morning session, it
seems to be the purpose of tbe conven
tion to put out a state ticket with J. B.
Hunnicutt or J. B. Culpepper at its
bra<l, and to elect delegates to the
national prohibition convention, which
meets in Cincinnati on July .70.
W. B. Hill, of Macon, would have been
tbe candidate for governor, but a tele
gram was received from him saying that
under no condition would be accept tbe
nomination.
The sensation of the day developed
just after the adjournment of tbe con
vention.
Thirty-seven representatives of the
fifth congressional district got together,
nominated Sam Small for congress and
swallowed the Ocala platform in its en
tirety.
Professor Scomp, of Oxford, presided
at this meeting. Or. J. O. Perkins nom
inal Sam Small. lie was named by
acclimation as the candidate, and ac
cepted the nomination In an enthusi
astic speech.
