To (lie democratic party of Sumter
county: There hag been no time with*
iu the pait twenty year,, when it ha,
been *o important, that every member
of the democratic party should Hand
»boulder to (boulder and man to man,
uow. Twice before our old enemy, the
republican party, ha, made a vigorous
effort to subvert the civil and political
liberty of the southern states, by an ef
fort to pass a force bill through con*
gross, uo that by bayonet rule this
grand old party of fraud and corrup-
tlon by placing its iron heel ii|ion the
neck of tlio Caucasslan, of the South, It
could continue in its power.
The last effort it made to secure tld
m m-'rous legislation, It came alaraiii, c
ly near accomplishing Its cove ...I de
sire; tile bill passed tbo lower t-mi-e of
congress with a rush, and came fear
fully uear passing the senate, and the
preslden', who is now a candi
date for re-election manifested a
bungirlng anxiety for It to
pass Uie senate, so that by bl, signature
|t would become a law. Who Is It that
does not recollect bow the manhood of
the South revolted at such a threatened
monstrosity? and bow tbe business In
terests north and south, were agitated'.'
and bow n gnat democratic leader at tbe
North cried out that '-If such a bill
should pass, then we would hive no
country?” We narrowly esca|>cd the
scourge.
Emboldened by its near approach to
victory, tbl* tame old enemy of liberty
and the rights of the people 1, preparing
for a more vigorous effort to be ready to
be ready to pass the force bill should it
come Into full control of tbo govern
ment. At the last republican national
convention, the leaders of the party in
their speeches before the convention
gave prominence to the force bill, and
allusions to It received Vociferous ap
plause by the delegates, and It received
a prominent position in tliclr party plat
form. Mr. lllalne, who Is considered
tbe greatest Intellect mid wisest states
man In tbe republican party, It Is said,
used ills great popularity and Influence
to assist In defeating this groat iol<|uity
‘Tnlted we stand, divided we fall,”
“In union there Is strength." And now
that tbe great mass of tbe people aeem
to be fatigued and growing Impatient
under tbe heavy burdens which tbe re
publican party for many years has been
piling on the masse, for tbe benefit of
the favored classes, and we have hope to
overthrow these despoilers of liberty
and Justice. Shall tbe white people of
tbe south, a brave, courageous and
cblvAlrio people, a people true to tbe In
sllnct, of liberty and justice, a people
who in all the elements which go to
make up true manhood are tbe | >eers of
any people, living or dead, shall such a
people, through Impatience of tbe
wrongs which they aie receiving at tbe
hands of the republican patty, split off
from the grand old democratic party,
the party which in the dark days of re
construction carried us safely through
that reign of terror, and beat back the
army of carpet-baggers from the north
who sought their living by plundering
the south; shall we bo true to this
faithful aud tried friend, which carries
with It nitny scare received while bat
tllug for liberty aud justice? Or shall
we abandon It for a phantom from
which we can possibly expect no help?

t'OK THK SENATE.
A Mirons Card Endorslns Hr. IV. A. Wilson
for Thai Place.
Timls.Recoiiiiku—There Is only one
name that baa been confessedly before
the people of Sumter county for senator
from this district There has been no
need for any other to be mentioned, be
cause n large majority of tbe people of
the county arc aatlstled with that one,
and the comfort and quiet of the county
will be much promoted if no other la
brought out at all.
The name I allude to la that of lion.
Wm. A. Wilson, and It seems to me that
we will consult the beet Interest of tbe
county and district If Mr. Wilton I* si
lowed a walk over in this race. He Is
In tbe first place an alllanceman, known
and read of all men; baa given bit time
smI energies, to n greater extent than
any man In tbe county, to promoting tbe
Interests of the alliance and its priori
pies. Tbe extraordinary success of tbe
business enterprise In this county Is due
more to bis quiet efforts than to any one
e!>r, and be baa never hesitated on any
proper occasion to champion and defend
the Interest of the people as set forth
when It was last before congress, and be „ )0 ,| ommn< j. of tbe order.
Du tho other hand, Mr. Wilson Is con-
was unhorsed by this convention mid

bend, or on the other band, strife, blood'
shed, disorganisation of business and a
prostration of all oar financial and Jma-
terlal Interests. And with such n dire
threat staring ut In tbe face, ehell the
whites In the eonth divide end split up?
or shall we on the contrary close up our
ranks, lock our shields together, ns did
thn ancient Roman soldiers, and move on
to irresistible victory against nay threat
ened force bill legislation.
There may be a time In the future
when the white people of the south can
afford to divide Into parties on account
of diversified views on political and
economic questions, but nsver so long
as tbe republican party is Infowtr, with
Its narrow sectional views stirring up
tbe war animosities of tbo north against
tbe south, while said party is using this
bloody shirt device, Oliver Twist like, to
divert tho attention while it Is robbing
tbe people by high tariff taxation ami
fraud.
The republican party bos been In
power tbirty-onc years tbo fourth of lost
March; a good deni of that time It bss
hail control of all departments of the
government. V.iver for an hour during
the whole of said timo has tbe demo
cratic party bad full charge of the gov
ernment. Tbe burdens which the re
publican party have Imposed upon tlio
people ere onerous end hard to bear, but
they ere not to be gotten rid of by leav
ing the democratic party anil going after
end searching for the bag of silver at
the end of the rainbow In the people'*
party. Such a course will probably get
u. Into deeper trouble. Stand firm and
keep united In the grand old democratic
party, and niter awhile 1 think the tide
will turn. Already on* battle be* been
fought and the victory won. It may be
that many more of like kind or of differ
ent kind* wUl hare to be fought before
our enemies will relseae their hold upon
the pocket* of the people to extort mon
ey by the robber tariff, or It may be that
the aerinns result* of this, fight any *9
awaken tbe lethargy of ‘
people to each n Mass of Jnetloo that
they wtll rise la their might and over
throw the republic** party a* tho re
sponsible canao for the Mood that

Then It teem, to ma that there could
be no dlfBculty In alt agreeing upon
Mr, Wilson as a satisfactory candidate to
all parties, end by giving him no opposi
tion thus sars the usual wrangle that Is
to be expected and feared when there
are more candidates than one. There
was only one candidate in the last sena
torial race In Sumter, and 1 hope there
will be but on* this time. I therefore
present the name of Hon. W. A. Wilson
as tbe choice of Sumter for nomination
In the democratic primary, and ask
unanimous consent that he be elected to
the state senate In October next
