Philadelphia, Dec. 23.—The Chest
nut Street National bank did not open
for business as usual. The reasou there
for was stated in a notice posted on the
door uud signed by Wiliiam H. Harut,
national examiner, which read as fol
lows:
“The Chestnut Street National bank
is closed for business aud is in the hands
of the uatioual bank examiner.”
A crowd of depositors soon gathered
about the door, bat there was .no special
excitement and as a general rule after
each had learned the nature of the no
tice on the door he moved away and his
place lu the crowd would be taken by
others anxious to gieau something re
garding the situation.
The bank has at all times held a goo i
reputatiou, but it has been known for
some time that its business aud neces
sarily its profits ha' T e fallen off cousin
erabiy. The bank’s suspension, how
ever. was a great surprise, especially so
in view of the high standing of its
officers. William Al. Siugeny is its
presideut and Isaac Cooper vice presi
dent.
The bank was started in 1887 on a
capital of 1500,000, with Robert E. Pat-
tisou as president. When the latter
took his seat us governor of Pennsyl
vania in 1801 Mr. Singerlv succeeded
him as president of the bank.
The Chestum Street Trust and Sav
ing Fund company, the officers of which
are identified with those of the bank,
und the offices being located iu the
same building, wus also Closed for busi
ness, but to what extent the trust com
pany is involved in the bank’s affairs
has not yet been announced.

Federation of Labor at a meeting to be
held Sunday afternoon, ciince .tne an
nual meeting held at Nashville a strong
sentiment tit favor of withdrawing
from the pareut body lias sprung up.
aud the leaders say that the step is very
probable. There is great dissatisfaction
over the ruling made by the Federation
