WaSHiiaTOS, Jan. 15 —The canva--
of Bepnblican members of tbe house i>!
representatives on tbe question of
■hanging the civil service law, which
has been conducted by ths Republican
steering committee is about completed,
lot the XU Bepnblican members uf the
house, tbe canvass is said to show that
I majority, varying from lb to 40. is
favorable to a change in tbe law, ac
cording to the degree of change proposed.
■IThis last factor leads to some differ-
[mm of opinion as to the result of the
canvass. Bepresentative Pearson of
[< Berth Carolina, a member of the com-
a mittee, places tbe number of llepob i-
}• cans who can be depended upon at 115.
It Hr. Evans of Kentucky, another mem-
jf her of tbe committee, placet the uu:u-|
g her at 186.
E Those who have made the canvass ,aj
R that in a number of cases entire state
■ delegations are shown by the canvass ro
Yfavor a change in the law, notably Norm
I Carolina, Tennessee. Kentucky, West
Virginia and New Hampshire. Tue
Minneaota count shows all but one fur a
change; Uiobigau all but two; in Penn
sylvania, 12 oat of 21 Republican mem-
are counted in the canvass for a
change in the law.
Beyond oompleting the canvass, the
1 opposition to the civil service law is
Ei taking no active steps at present, tbe
w pOrpoee being to wail until tbe regular
civil service committee of the house
takes action on the bill before it pro-
poses a modification of the law.
SENSATION IN A SCHOOL.
Itofiusr May Its PnsMiM For Whip
ping Oaa at flie I’lslls
Columbia. & C., Jan. 15. —A sensa
tion was censed in the city graded
schools hare by legal proceedings being
threatened against Professor B. L. Junes,
principal of tbe city schools, for whip
ping Alfred Martin, tbe yonng eon of
|W. T. Martin, one of the best known
rVosinesa men of Colombia.
Yonng Martin persisted in whispering
in his class Professor Jons* called him
up and gave him m severe flogging. On
reaching home Mr. Martin examined
his son and found stripes ou his back as
large as a person’s finger. He went be
fore a magistrate for tbe purpose of
taking oat a warrant for Professor Jones
on the 9harge of ssssolt and battery.
Toe school trustees got him to desist on
the promise that the matter would be
investigated.
I It is said the teacher completely wore
bis 'Tod" out upon the disobedient
child, and the condition in which he
was found goes a long way unts Veri
fying this statement.
The affair has caused a great deal of
xcitement in town among the acnool
atrons and Professor Jones will hear
rom them, it is thought, in a very uu-
BUM* fashion.
