Mayor Felder Has Big development
, Scheme on Foot.
The many friends of Mayor J. B.
Felder are interested in learning that
he will shortly engage in a great immi
gration movement towards southern
Alabama,(which promises a vast deal
for the settlement and development of
that section of the state. Capt. Felder
was oat of the city yesterday aud, therp
tore, full particulars anddotailsregard-
iog the matter and bis plans therein
aould not be ascertained at this time.
It is understood, however, that ho will
be backed by very strong influences
and will mako a success of the under
taking.. Capt. Felder is an aggressive
and determined man at whatever he
undertakes, a man of wonderful ener
gy, popularity and perserveranor, and
his hundreds of friends hero are
oonfident that ho will attain eucceess in
this ventnre which promises mnch for
him in a financial way.. It is under
stood that Capt. Felder will, for the
prosent, remove to Alabama to bo near
the field of his operations.

Farmers Asked Injunction to Restrain
Company.
In snparior court yesterday Judge
Littlejohn heard argument for per
manent injunction brought by certain'
citizens, residents of the Fifteenth
district of Snmter, to' restain the Bell
Telephone Cp. from patting ap poles
in their fields. The company, in build
lag its new line from Amerions to Ab
beville, is pursuing a straight oonrse
through woods and fields instead of
following tho railroads or country
roads. When poles wore put up in the
fields of petitioners a vigorous protest
was made and a temporary restraining
order grantod last week. Yesterday
Judge Littlejohn heard the petition for
permanent injnnotion, reserving his
deaision.

assume his new duties, succeeding
W. O. Howard there. Mr. Whitaker’s

the holidays, joining him in Colnmbus
early in January.

Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars’ Worth
of Property Destroyed.
Dallas. Ga., Dec. 17.—Fully $25,000
worth of prbperty went up In fire and
smoke here yesterday evening In the
fiercest conflagration that has ever
visited tills city. Five business houses
were almost entirely consumed, the
blackened walls of brick being all
that now remain.
No lives were lost, and no one, go
far as Is known, was Injured. The
fire started about G o'colek and was
over within two hours after the first
alarm was given. There is no fire
apparatus here, and the work of pre
venting the spread of the flames was
accomplished by the hundreds of peo
ple who flocked to the scene.
The fire broke out In tlfe hoarding
house occupied by O. C. Gillett and his
family, which was over the grocery and
dry goods stores of Davis & Finch
The origin of the fire is unknown.
It started In one of the rooms of the
house. The flames destroyed the
business houses on tho west side of
the square.
With the exception of the Davis &
Finch. store, all the others weTe one
story and, nearly all of brick. The
Dallas hardware store and the furni
ture house of R. M. Lee & Bro. were
consumed, in addition to a large ware
house In the block.
A rough estimate puts the damage
to buildings at about $15,000, and
stock at $10,000.

Member of Hockey Club Meets With
Painful Accident
New York. Dec. 18.—Whitney Car
penter, a member of the' Andover
Preparatory School hookey team, nar
rowly esaaped bleeding to death as
the rosuR of Injuries received in a
match with the team of tho Cutler
school of this city. During a scrim
mage Carpenter fell and struck the
blade of the Cutler man's skate. He
was picked up unconscious, bleeding
from a deep cut over the left ear. The
flow of blood was staunched with dif
ficulty, and he was removed to his
mother’s residence.
Townsend, another Andover player,
was hurt, but not seriously, although
he was obliged to retire from the
game. The game resulted in a draw,
the score being 3 to 3.
