The Americas plant of the Atlantic
Compress Co. closed down yesterday
after a most socoessfnl season’s bast-
neas, daring which time 44,BOO bales of
cotton were pressed ;here. This state
ment of its business is very satisfacto-
ry, though the Ameriens press did not
handle as mash cotton this season as
last year.
Tbia was doo to a more equitable
distribution of ootton among the com
prises in this territory.
The Atlantio Company owns or leases
ail the presses, very nearly, in Geor
gia, and distributes the ootton accord
ingly. The shortage here this season,
compared with last season’* business,
was something like 18,000 bales.
The business here was admirably
handled by Manager Battler, and at no
time was there a ootton blockade in
Ameriens as bas been the ease often
times in reeent years.
And with the closing of the press it
may be said that the cotton season
here is practically ended.
The recent phenomenal advance in
prices cleared the Americas ware
houses, and ail are very nearly ready to
tarn oat the laat bale. A count was
made yesterday of the local stock, and
bat 380 bales remain unsold here, the
smallest stock in many years, it not
the smalleat ever, at this early date in
the season.
On Marob 1st. laat there were
thousand halos or more stored in the
warehonse here.
And warehonse receipts this season
have been most gratifying, being 0,500
boles ahead of last year's receipts.
Daring the entire'sesson of 1901 and
1002 tha warehonse receipt* here were
about 26,000 balea,
Thia season, to date, the warehouses
hare turn handled 32,822 bale* wagon
cotton, or 0,322 bales more than daring
the season previous. As the acreage
here was abont the same, It would
seem that Amoriona ont into the terri
tory of other markets this year. Cer
tain ft is,something brought 0,600 more
bales cotton hers.
This it more ootton than the ware
houses here have reoeived in s num
ber of yesrs. And even these flgnree
will be surpassed next sessou.

Manager Dent ie etill oat of the city,
having gone away Sunday, it is sop-
posed, to Charleston.
The store te still open tod in charge
of Dent's piano Inner, Mr. Ponder, a
skilled anist in his profession, who
has a bill of sale from Manager Dent
to the remaining atcck.
Mr. Ponder claims that the company
owes him a considerable amonnt
salary, and that to reimborse him the
bill of sale waa given. He hopes to
effect some kind of settlement with
creditors whereby he may finally get
wbat is eomiug to him.
Yesterday, however, er<d t jra here
looked after their own interests.
Two or three fine organs, consigned
for shipment, were located in the office
of the Southern Express Co. and at
tached. Several other Instruments
were likewise found, and a spare room
at the conrthouse resembles a conser
vatory of mnaio in miniature.
It appears that the entire stock ot
pianos bad recently been closed ont,
several fine instrument* going at most
reasonable figures, and little remained
in the store beyond a few organa cov
ered by the bill of sale gtvon Saturday
last to Mr. Ponder,
The Dent affair waa tba subject of
considerable comment here yesterday.
The A. L. Dent Co. appeared to be do
ing a land office bnsinesa reeently and
the serving of attachments caused
some little surprise.
