Chicago, Feb. 26.—Tbe military and
civic authorities here received dis
patches from a number of points sit
uated In tho region of tbe Oolima vol
cano, giving accounts of tbe terrorism
that prevails among tbe people on ac
count of the active eruption of that
volcano, says a dispatch to The Tri
bune from Guadalajara, Mexico!
According to tbe reports received
here from Tuxpam and other towns
situated near the volcano, the as
pect of the eruption la growing con
stantly worse. The people are flee
ing from the stricken region* and their
terror Is Intensified by the 'severe
earth trombllngs which have taken
place at froquent intervals since the
eruption began.
The seismic disturbances have been
so severe aa to destroy a number of
buildings at Tuxpam and In the city
of Oolima. It Is reported that towns
moro remotely situated also have suf
fered severe damago. So far as Is
known there has been no loss of life.
Tbe people are flocking into Manzanil
lo and moro distant points by hun
dreds.
A tidal wave Is feared at Manzanillo
should the seismic disturbances con
tinue. - Thcro are many thriving vil
lages situated close to the base of
Mount Colima, and all these are being
deserted rapidly.
Construction work on the Manzanil
lo branch of the Mexican Central rail
road has been suspended on account
of the volcanic eruptions and earth
quakes. This line Is built to Tux
pam, within a few miles of the volca
no. and a force of men waa building
tunnels on the unfinished portion of
the line. It 1s stated that the earth
quake shocks have done much damage
to these tunnels.
A party of Mexican Central direc
tors. accompanied by President A. A.
Robinson, Is making an Inspection trip
over this extension, and It Is report
ed that they were at Tuxpam when
the most violent eruptions of the vol
cano took place.
Nothing has been heard here from
tho party, but no uneasiness as. to the
safety of the members Is felt
