There is good reaaon for the belief that
the Seaboard shape in Americas will ere
long be even a hosier hire of industry
than at present, though it is now the
largest and best equipped plant in the
South and employs a large force. Set'

the belief is expressed that this else* of
work will again be done here and the
capaicty of the plant enlarged accord
iogly. Daring the inspection made
recently by President Williams and
other cfficialsol the Seaboard, they
were greatly and moet favorably tm
pressed with condition* here, and
while nothing of an antborltative na
tare is known it is believed that at an
early date the capacity of the Ameri
cos shops will be very considerably fn*
creased by additions in two or three de
partments. It is an end greatly (to be
desired, as it would mean the employ
ment of a large force of skilled artisans,
Already something like :W0 (men are
employed in tbe Ameriene shops, and
Ihia number would be largely increased.

CORN IN TRANSIT IS
RUINED IN BIG LOTS
The Merchants In Quandary
Thereabout.
SHIPMENTS ARE LONG OVERDUE
Corn Is Spoiling In Carload Lots and
Will Probably bo Rafused Upon
Arrival, Lost ia From Delay With
Railroads.
Americas produee merchants are
practically ont of oorn—tbe western
article—and despite the feet that many
carloads of tbe Missouri product are on
route here the truth remains that
Americas, at present, is “eornlets"*nd
no one ear tell whan the eltuation will
be relieved.
And even when tbe carloads ordered
begin to arrive it 1* a matter of grave
donbt whether, in their oonditlon, the
shipments will be received by con
etgneee.
For it ia feared that a great deal of
corn will be rotten.
Many of these shipments have been
on tbe road from St. Loni* to Amertcua
for from three to six weeks. Western
shippers advise that ten days in transit
is the extreme limit for oorn, as, after
that time it will begin a “heatmg”pro<
eess and is liable to spoil.
This is tbe situation confronting
many here who have corn iu transit.
It may be almost worthless when it
arrives here.
Americas merobsnts,in years peat,bad
all the experience they desired in band
ling damaged cirn, and the chaneea
are that these delayed shipments will
be refused.
The tronble, It is said, le with the
railroad* at some point or other. Ship
ments from St. Lonla should reach
Americas in six days. In this instance
they have been in transit six weeks in
stead, after eorn baa been loaded in
ears at western point* and bills lading
leaned therefor.
It is not unlikely that litigation will
result if shipments are refused. Some
body will have to pocket a considers
bleloss.
THEY COME IN CARS
AND GO THEIR WAY.
