With a pistol bullet won.ud in bis
right tbigb, Charles McLendon, a ne
gro mill baud here, has “acknowl
edged the corn” or rather the meal,
and in the confines of his steel cage he
donbtless regrets any part he may
have plaved in the robbery of a freight
car in the yards of the Central railroad
at Cotton Avenue on Wednesday night.
Within a'few hours after the rob
bery was detected McLendon was in
jail and his wound dressed.
ThoTimes-ltecorder yesterday morn
ing told of the bold robbery tbo night
before, 'when a freight train takiog
water in tbe yards here was attacked
by burglars, a car door opened and
many sacks of meal tumbled out in a
heap w
Officers Oliver, Barrow and City
marshal Feagin found tbe meal tum
bled down the embankment. Feagin
the “old sleuth” knowing that the
thief would come back for the loot, lay
down in tbe mud, pistol iulhand, to
wait- Tbe sacks of meal were covered
ort with a coat, and, ub tbe officers
supposed, belonging to one of the car
breakers.
While Feagin lay wniting in the mud
and mire a figure loomed up and took
hold of tbe coat that served as a cover
ing for the meal.
Tbe nogro was commanded to throw
up bis bands and surrender.
Instead, Feagin save, he made a mo
tion as if to pull a pistol, whereupon
the officer fired four shots, one of
which took effect, though the negro
ran. At midnight Officers Oliver and
Barrow, who bad been working upon
tbe case, went off duty, while Marshal
Feagin and Sheriff Bell continued tbe
hunt and at a later hour made a good
“find”
It was under tbe railroad bridge at
Jackson street that they found a wagon
and mules. Tbe team was fully ideu
tilled at tbe oity ball yesterday.
A letter in tbe coat found on tbe pile
of meal led to tbe arrest of,Charles Mc
Lendon yesterday morning. Bell and
Feagin fonnd him with a bullet wound
in hisjtbigb. He then told tbe story
of tbe robbery, and a sack of meal wbb
located in an outhouso. McLendon
did not then implicate anyone in tbe
robbery, though there may be others.
The officers were very highly com
mended for.,thus ferreting out to
quickly a bold and daring crime.

THIS PRISONER NOT RESTIVE
Takes Life Easily While Awaiting His
Turn.
Among tbe many prisoners in Sum
ter’s barred castle, none appears to
take life as easily and appears more
oontented than does Lefye, tbe white
man held for tbe grand jnry in con
nection with tbe burglary at Sheffield’s
store here recently. Lefye was re
manded to jail in defanlt of 1-500 bond
and will linger there until the grand
jury investigates tbe case in Jnne.
Lefye is well boused and fed, and his
surroundings are a paradise compared
to the Columbus rock pile whence
Sheriff Bell plucked him.

Mr.W.W.Davis,one of Sumter’s live-

yesterday with the largest load of
home-raised meat brought here in a
long while. He swapped the hams for
dollars, and has plenty more meat at
home tor his own needs. There is no
better evidence of prosperity than
when farmers sell surplus meat and
corn as many of those in Snmter are
doing.

Amerious profess to believe that the
bottom has not yet been reaobed in the
present stamp. At the olose yester
day May cotton was Bteady at 9.04.
Just at present there is 'little demand
among local boyers and, by the way,
bnt little spot cotton wherewith to sup
ply it. The local market is steady at
